An open invitation to meet on Santorini, June 12

by brotherleelove

Greetings Fellow Travellers!

I invite you all to a casual get-together on Santorini Island, Friday evening, June 12, 2009, for some cheerful company, good food and local wine at one of my favorite restaurants, Laokasti, in the most beautiful village of Oia. http://www.laokasti-santorini.com/santorini-restaurants.html

The festivities will begin at 7pm. Sunset is around 8:45 for those who want to experience what all the fuss is about.

Rest assured that there will be a bus passing right by Laokasti that will return you to Imerovigli, Firostefani and Fira later on after the sunset. No one knows the bus schedule for June yet but when it's available it will be posted here: http://www.ktel-santorini.gr. Once you're on the island you will also find the most current timetables posted at every village bus square as well as at many travel agencies .

Look at this map for the Restaurant Location: http://www.santorini-hotels.info/santorini-island-santorini-map/santorini-oia-map.htm#c

Laokasti Restaurant is Orange #16 in 'C10' across from the large Church of St. George, on the right side of the road about 300 yards/meters past the Anemomilos Tavern and the Windmill at the "Oia Market" ('C13').

The prices are fair and the food from the standard menu is traditional Greek cuisine. I think you can expect to pay between 15-20 euro per person for a meal, more for grilled meats and fish, and of course the wine is extra! Please let me know soon if you plan to attend so I can give the owner of Laokasti some idea of what to expect in the way of customers that night. Also, **_VERY IMPORTANT_**-- I promised the owner I would try to give him some idea of how many people will be coming, and most importantly how many of you would be having a meal as opposed to drinks and mezzes, so please let me know what your intentions will be food-wise.

Keep checking this message for updates. I will "top" it occasionally so everyone has a chance to read it and so it doesn't get buried.

Any questions?

Hope to see you there!

Hi Lee, Wish I could come, but sadly I have to wait till September for my visit to the Greek Isles. Have you thought about putting a message on your "meetings" page? Then people who are coming can sign up on the same page and VT automatically sends them all reminders when the time is near etc. You can still update this message like you have said and then you will have all areas covered. Good luck with your meet, I think it will be fabulous.

Murphy's Bar is the closest to a Scottish bar I know of. They are in Fira and do show sporting events on the TV there.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

Walk Firostefani To Fira

by Mikebb

The 10 minute walk to Fira from our accommodation at Firostefani often took a half hour or longer. There was so much to see either side of the walking pathh, much of the time beautiful calder views, local homes and apartments on the cliffside, interesting local shops, churches and people from all over the world.

THE CATHEDRAL MITROPOLI

by LoriPori

The Greek Cathedral MITROPOLI in Fira, Santorini, was built for the arrival of King Otto in 1842. The weekend that we were in Santorini there was a lovely wedding going on at Mitropoli. The square in front of the Cathedral was teeming with the bride and groom and their guests and also with VT members as this square was the meeting place for our get-togethers. It was also right near our Hotel Kavalari.

Break my heart, I'll break your plate

by Euromeet2007

Usually, breaking plates in praise of a musician or dancer is considered a part of "kefi" - the irrepressible expression of emotion and joy.
A plate might also be broken when two lovers parted, so that they would be able to recognize each other by matching the two halves even if many years passed before they met again. Small split versions of the mysterious Phaistos disk are used by modern Greek jewelers this way, with one half kept and worn by each of the couple.

Vlichada Village

by Jeannkelly

Since this village is not so popular to tourists, I'd say it should be considered a less beaten track of Santorini. More known for it's jetty/yatch (club) port, the village boasts of a long beach which is often void of tourists.

Definitely there are not so many structures in the area but I guess one can get some simple bed and breakfast accommodation.

Elegant shopping in Santorini

by Aggeliki

I think Santorini is an island with the most nice shops in Greece! Shops with nice elegant souvenirs, clothes, accessories, local crafts, art things are in all main places in Santorini. Local crafts from Lava, and stone of Santorini, wooden crafts, clothes and accesories ( the most different and unique in Greece, I think,) local food: Fava, wine. expensive prices generally
