kastro walls
by smiler123
it will be our first time in santorini any suggestion on a bar to watch the sunset
Re: kastro walls
by travelgourmet
This location is a restaurant that sitting out on the veranda and dining as if you were in the sky overlooking the caldera and other Islands. Food is excellent and the ambience is romantic when watching the sunset. Make a reservation for about one half hour before sunset to enjoy both the food and the view. The Sphinx is the restaurant and it is in Fira. See website: http://www.sphinx.gr/
If you are staying in OIA then Kastro is the place.

My opinion differs from Travelgourmet's, although I'm glad his experience was a positive one. For me the Sphinx is overpriced and also overrated as a restaurant and the view does not necessarily take in the sunset. It really depends on when you plan to be there and whether or not you want to watch the sun actually 'sink' into the sea. That's probably not going to happen from any restaurant in Fira. There are land masses that will most likely block that actual event there. You'll have to go to Imerovigli or Oia for that. In Oia you can go to the Kastro Restaurant or the Pelekanos Restaurant. In Imerovigli go to the Blue Note Restaurant.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island
Grapes
by oriettaIT
Santorini island is known for the very good wine they product.
Local grapes provide strong and tasty wine, the soil is very dry even if fertile because the volcano and give a typical taste to the wine.
The main types of wine produced in Santorini are:
Brusko - Red / dry / strong
Nichteri - White / dry / strong
Vissando - Red / sweet / extremely strong (looks and tastes like liqueur) The grapes tree grow in a very interesting shape, almost laying on the ground to protect themself from the UV ray and the strong wind.

Imerovigli Village
by Lilasel
Santorini has a number of spots where one can take magnificent pictures of the unique scenery the island offers. But perhaps the most outstanding is the one offered in Imerovigli, at the highest spot of the rim of the Caldera (300 meters high) and witha fabulous view to the volcano.
Imerovigli, which means day-guard, is near Fira and a place which should not be missed while on Santorini. The castle of Skaros is worth a visit. Tavernas, restaurants, bars, hotels and rooms to rent are plentiful in Imerovigli. My favourite taverna is Tasos with wonderful home-made traditional food.
Money to burn, plates to smash
by Euromeet2007
Breaking plates is also an act which implies abundance - "We have so many plates we can break them!" - similar to lighting a fire with a piece of paper money.
But breaking plates is now considered a "dangerous" practice due to flying shards, and perhaps also because of intoxicated tourists who have poor aim and may hit the dancers or musicians. It is officially discouraged and Greece actually requires a license for establishments who want to allow it. (Supposedly, plate smashing replaced another, earlier way of showing approval - by throwing knives into the floor at the dancer's feet.)
By the way, if you're offered plates to throw during dances or other performances - be aware that these plates are not free and they will be tallied up at the end of the evening, usually at least a Euro or two each. They are very expensive noisemakers - try applauding or calling out "Opa!" instead. And if you're wearing sandals, please step carefully through the shards. Closing your eyes at the moment of smashing the plate is also an excellent idea.
Imerovigli

Unfortunately you can't get a package deal to Imerovigli - however - in there lies its charm. We were given a heads up on it when our tour rep saw our cameras, he KNEW that Imerovigli was for us. So off we set, from Perissa, on the bus into Fira - and from there into Imerovigli.
On arrival we cursed our rep.
All we could see was a village. Nothing of real interest. A nice little church, granted, but that was about it. Then I pointed to a gap between some houses.
Walking through that gap brought us to the reason why Imerovigli is a hidden wonder.
Across the cliff face were dotted those little white houses that Santorini is famed for. The view of the bay was astonishing. So many of the [one can only guess - expensive] hotels had infinity pools that looked over the bay - simply stunning.
Taking a walk down towards a little, well, kind of island (although it was still attached to Imerovigli - so I'm not sure what you'd call it) we met a dog that accompanied us the whole way. He showed us round, no joke, pointing out areas of interest. Seriously! What a sweetie! The 'island' has an old Venetian ruin on it - and we were the only people there (not surprising - it WAS mid-day!).
When you see photos of Greece - you often see photos of blue sea, blue sky and a white dome? That HAS to be Imerovigli.
Make sure you go there. Take a strong pair of walking shoes, plenty of water, a hat and your camera. You WON'T regret it!
[btw. the restaurants aren't cheap - but the views are AMAZING]
