Kayaking in Santorini

by yaya15923

There is a water sport tip on a VT member's page about kayaking near Ammoudi harbor but the post is from 2004. I also read a post on Travel Advisor and someone mentioned that kayaking is not allowed because of all the ferry traffic.

So there is no place to kayak, at all, on the island?

You'll have to go to the east side of the island to find any kayaking rentals. Try Kamari and Perissa Beaches. These two beaches are where you can rent watersports equipment. If there is kayaking available that's where you'll find it. Boating is allowed inside the caldera but there's no one renting equipment there. Yes, it would be dangerous because of the ferry traffic, but it would be safe in and near Amoudi Harbor _IF_ you could find a kayak, which I don't think you will.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

Take a stroll from Fira to Imerovigli.

by Maurizioago

Sometimes I took a pleasant stroll from Fira to Imerovigli. Between these two places there is another village; Phirostephani.

Once you are in Imerovigli you will notice a huge rock in the sea. Its name is Skaros. There is a small church on it. Once I went to that church and it was quite a tiring walk.

Golden sunsets

by Helga67

The island is famous for its sunsets. They are indeed gorgeous. Depending on the weather conditions the sunsets differ from day to day. So if you are staying at the Caldera side of the island you can enjoy the sunsets day after day in another light.

Masters of the Walk Ways

by giampiero6

Donkeys are not just a means of conveying tourists (and their euro) up to town, but they are also a practical and logical way to get propane, toilet paper, beer, and other important items up and down the town perched on the cliff. I think it's just a nice added bonus to watch these guys do their thing and see the ordinary daily routine of life going on as it has for a very long time.

Be prepared to climb lots of stairs

by RianGreer

Bring a backpack if at all possable, wheeled luggage is not fun on cobblestone streets and lots of stairs to get anywhere. Sunscreen is very expensive, bring it with you to the island or at least buy it in town, at the beach you'll pay almost twice as much as in town.

VOTHONAS

by sandysmith

Vothonas is a small rock village. Architecturally described as the strangest village on Santorini and just for that reason considered worth a visit - so we made a stop here when we had the car for a day. Pathways climb up to the houses, a complex of network of open and closed excavations, a unique and untouched architectural complex. As the coastal villagers did with the Caldera, so the people of the interior dug their houses into rocky walls of a ravine. The village has a small church built inside a cave and another interesting church is that of St. Anna which is the oldest in the village, being built in 1827. If you decide to go in the carved wooden screen decorated with scenes from the Old Testament can be seen.
