Help! Hotel for the Handicapped needed

by wanderlustig

We need your help. We will be in Santorini for the nights of October 31st and November 1st. One of our friends is handicapped and cannot climb stairs. We have two problems. First, many hotels will be closed. Second, it is difficult to find a hotel with an elevator or rooms at ground level. Can anyone help us?

Hi

Try staying on one of the beaches. For eg. - http://www.irinis-santorini.com/kamari-hotel-rooms.html - suggests a nice room at ground level. However November 1 could be a problem. Email to check.

Caldera views are nice but lots of steps so perhaps take in a caldera sunset at a restaurant.

We have stayed at Irinis Villas- yes the view is spectacular- but the poster clearly states that her friend cannot climb steps. This accommodation will not be suitable.

You might give this one a try- it is a new hotel, and in Fira- its possible that they have facilities that will suit your friend.

Atlantis hotel

by anna_zaira

As I work in Santorini, I suggest you choose a hotel in Fira. At this time of year all the other areas (eg Kamari) will be almost deserted.
I agree with the suggestion of Atlantis hotel. Central location, great view, and tavernas and shops near by in walking distance.
Enjoy your travel to our beautiful island!

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

Oia - Not To Be Missed

by Mikebb

Our accommodation was in Firostafani Village only 10 minutes walk from Fira Town. It would have been easy to remain in this comfort zone and have a memorable holiday on Santorini , however we made the trip to Oia twice, once for the sunset and again mid afternoon the following day to enjoy the village when it is less crowded.

If you want to see Blue Dome churches Oia is the place to visit and they look spectacular, especially when you can look down from above. We made sure we found a good cafe with a view over the calder and enjoyed the view, coffee and cake.

My wife enjoyed the shops as we walked the narrow streets, always something different to see and buy.

We had a hire car for both visits, however there is public transport which should get you there in 20 minutes.

DRINKING AT THE FRIENDLY GREEK TAVERNA

by DAO

I ended up drinking in the Friendly Greek Taverna (Also known as Koutouli) for 3 nights in a row with phenomenal members of VT! We had a honeymoon couple, single travellers, small groups and absolute drunkards like myself. What a great time! Our hosts even opened for us after they had closed when I asked them nicely. They also gave us free olives and other food to go with our well priced big beers. We sat outside and laughed and sang and talked. I even saved a cat from certain death and we fed the offending dogs anyway. VT! What a website! Wow!

Thank you to all the VT Members who came and drank with me! I really enjoyed your company and we had a great time.

All the very best!

An ancient city in Akrotiri, Santorini island

by Aggeliki

In Akrotiri there is an ancient city that lay untouched since 1450BC after being buried by volcanic ash and it was excavated by Professor Marinatos in 1967. The site on the southwest tip of the island has been found to be in a very good state of preservation. Some houses are two or three storeys high with their rooms and windows frames intact. During the excavations amazing frescoes were found all of which are now displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

PARTYING UNTIL THE EARLY HOURS !

by DAO

Many bars and even tavernas will basically stay open as long as they have customers. Fira is the night out capital of Santorini and I even got a Taverna to reopen for me at Midnight. Staying open until 2-4 am is a possibility. If you want a late night mal as well, it’s OK. Greek custom is to eat late as well. This all makes for a great tourist adventure if you like to dance/club all night.

Have fun!

Some of the treasures we came across...

by GracesTrips

We rented a car. So, we took full advantage of being able to drive all over the island and discovered some beautiful and interesting spots. What's great is that there are not too many options on which way to go. It's either east, west, north or south. No street names. Your guide is the landmarks. Fun!
