From santorini... where to?
by samitbabu
Hi,
I am staying at santorini ( early august) and then have one day before i conclude my trip and return back to Athens.
Can anyone suggest whether it would be better to go to Paros or Naxos ?
( Mykonos is not really an option for me anymore)
Would love to hear from you guys !!

I prefer Paros. It's very relaxed there. The main village of Parikia has a small museum plus the "Church of 100 Doors". If you rent a motorscooter you can easily explore as much of the island as time allows, and if so desired you can take the local shuttle ferry to Antiparos for a quick look around. You can take the scooter with you to Antiparos from the port of Pounta for just a couple of Euro and drive into the hills to see the cavern.

I'd say Paros if only to see the 'church of 100 doors', a really wonderful building. And only a few hundred mtrs from where the ferries dock.

Have not stayed at Paros- but I can tell you that we absolutely loved Naxos. The island is quite large, and you could hire a car & drive inland to see the vinyards & olive groves. Easily done in a few hours.Magnificent scenery.
If you don't want to hire a car- there are lovely walking areas around the old part of the island, with many historical monuments, churches, a museum etc. And there is a lovely strip of restuarants ,tavernas & shops just next to the port.
The Naxos islanders are very warm & relaxed, and the food is GREAT.Naxos is close to Santorini, about 2 hours by ferry, I think.

Well it depends.......from Naxos to Athens it is a 6 hour trip:
Departure times from Naxos to Athens:
at 7:25 a.m., Wed, June 9 to Sept 22 (Blue Star Ferries)
at 9:30 a.m., Mon, until Oct 25 (Blue Star Ferries)
and late afternoons at 6.15pm.
From Paros to Athens the ferry travel time is 5 hours- so there is not much difference. (By the way, its the same ferry that comes from Naxos- it calls at Paros before reaching Athens.) and vice-versa.
Alternativly- there are flights from Naxos to Athens airport. You could investigate that on Google. Flight time 35mins.

Along with the conventional car ferries that stop at both Naxos and Paros before returning to Athens, there will be an Hellenic Seaways Highspeed ferry from Paros to Athens that takes about 3 hours. You can see what's available to you on your travel dates here: http://www.gtp.gr

Travel Tips for Santorini Island
MAGICAL SUNSETS

Our fifth Port of Call & Final Destination
Built on the rim of a submerged volcanic crater, the beautiful island of SANTORINI is our last Port of Call. Renownd for its magnificent views, remarkable landscapes, turquoise seas and magical sunsets, Santorini is the Black Pearl of the Aegean. The winding streets of its quaint villages are lined with shops, restaurants. open-air cafe's and nightspots.
The princiapal towns of Fira and Oia are perched on the rim of the submerged crater and their colorful restaurants and tavernas tumble down the cliff-face. Sunsets defy description and are best shared with others celebrating "Sundown", just as we did Friday night in Oia with our fellow VTers.

There is a superb view out from Fira to the Kamenes, the two islets of black stone created by the volcano 197 B.C. The islets can be visited by launch. Enjoy a walking trip (5hours) on the volcanic island and scuba diving in the deep pure water.
The view of Caldera
by Lilasel
Santorini isn't about beach resorts. Its about Caldera views and romance!
There are many hotels with Caldera views to suit almost every budget. Most of them are in Fira as well as in Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani - north of Fira.
BEER MULES AND PACK HORSES
by DAO
Santorini is mostly steep cliffs and rugged hills. The ports and airport bring all goods to the island. So how does your refreshing beer at the bar or toilet paper in the mini-market get to you? Often, it is still by horse and mule transport. Without exception it was older men who still use our 4 legged friends to haul goods up the steep climb from the port. In fact the field next to my hotel had horses used for this purpose. I watched the owner put them away every night (pictured). Don’t worry about their welfare. They all seemed well feed, all had decorations and blankets, and had bells so they could be heard coming around a corner.
The Big Rock
by shulmajs
There is a path down to the big rock below Imerovigli. It descends from the main walkway along the edge of the cliff, to a small church, in step form. Past the steps it continues as a dirt path. Eventually it leads to another church perched on the edge of nothing. Watch your step! Bring water! The view is quite spectacular. The trip down takes about half an hour, and the trip back up about an hour.
