need recommendation on where to stay in Santorini Jul24-29
by nancy_noun
hello all
I would love to have some recommendation on where to stay in Santorini next weekend. My husband and I love nice beaches, plenty of tourists, busy lifestyles and busy nights. Any town has the crowd walking around, restaurants and shops, nightclubs staying late? ? Oio or Fiera... Not sure also the black beaches are they pretty popular? Is the sand rough or soft? IS this swimmable? What is the most popular destination inside santorini and where do you advice us to stay

Delete Oia, it's rather boring, no nightlife and full of daytrippers and nowhere near any beaches.
Fira has more nightlife but it's intensively crowded at this time of year, easier to get to the beaches.
A better choice is either Kamari Beach or Perissa, both are large resorts with plenty of people and life. The black sand/grit beaches are popular (there's no alternative), they are swimmable but can be rough sea when the wind is strong, quite often in July.
If you really want good beaches then take the first ferry out to Naxos or Paros where there are much better beaches.
It's high season so any reccommendation of specific accommodatrion is just about pointless as they will be almost sure to be full.

Hi we were in Santorini for 3 days Sept'08, hired a car for a day and this enabled us to see the whole island.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island
Romantic nights...
by Gokcecicek
Everything in Oia. Walking down the narrow streets, watching the moonlight near the port, etc. Santorini is a famous Greek island especially for romantic holidays. That is true, it is a very romantic island. However, if you are planning to have a really nice night, reveal your feelings to your lover or even propose marriage wait to see Oia. It does not help you to "have" feelings, but helps you to "reveal" them. :)) Good luck
NEA KAMENI - THE VOLCANO
by LoriPori
The significance of this area is that it is the youngest volcanic landform in the Eastern Mediterranean. NEA KAMENIhas an active volcanic center with its oldest rock formations dating back 430 years and its most recent, a mere 50 years. The landscape has an unearthly natural beauty.
A visit to Nea Kameni was part of the Pirate Ship excursion. Many on board opted to take a walk along the rim of the crater where smoke rises up and the stones are too hot to touch. Remember to bring good walking shoes and a hat to protect you from the sun, if you decide to go here.
See the kitchen
by ealgisi
I found Greek people very friendly.
If you go eat in a Taverna (a local restaurant), and someone invites you to see the kitchen ad shows you the food before cooking it, don't say no, go and have a look around in the kitchen.
They are proud to show you the kitchen, i think is a way to show you how they work and ther working environment.
Hair Dryers
by GracesTrips
I should have learned my lesson the first time. I went to Paris and the hotel provided hair dryers in each room. Oh my gosh! Such a low powered hair dryer it was that it took about 20 minutes to dry my hair. Well, no different in Greece. Stayed at 4 different hotels - all providing hair dryers in the room - all of them were pretty bad. So, my suggestion would be to buy a hair dryer for Europe with the correct European electrical plug.
Secluded red beach
by Q-Man
Red beach is located southwest of ancient Akrotiri. Follow the signs there until you come to a parking lot. You'll have to hike 5 minutes on a cliff trail to get to this beach. The trail is rocky but it's worth a look and pictures. This beach has red sand from the surrounding red cliffs. It is a secluded spot and waves are relatively calm. There is a bar and sandwich shop located on the beach front and nothing else. If you want privacy, this is the place to go.
