Breakfast / Coffee spots

by nattybabe

Hi all,

Getting excited about going to Greece next week!

Quick question, we fly into Thira very early morning next Friday (6.30am) and we can't check into the hotel (guesthouse) until midday and can't even leave bags until 8am. Are there any cafes, restaurants etc open that early in Fira so we can wait in style? May be a stupid question but you never know!

Thanks,

Santorini is a small island but I am pretty sure, that by the time you will arrive to your hotel it will be 8 am. If you feel like you need to kill 30 min (the most) try to scavenge the airport for some flayers and catalogs about "what to do" on Santorini.
Another good idea, since the taxi is very expensive, take local bus (very classy Mercedes bus) you will have a much better view at the island seating high in the bus, than from the taxi.
Anyway, Santorini thrives because of tourism, I am sure there will be something open in Fira before 8 am.

Breakfast / Coffee spots

You do not have to be afraid about that! You are going to visit an island which, par excellence, lives from tourism and knows very well how to deal with tourists!

Around the main Square of Fira (Fira is called the capital of the island and not Thira!), you can find plenty of cafes, servicing coffees, snacks, croissants, pizzas and similar goodies and most of them stay open all night long!

They know very well that boats and planes arrive at any time, tourists will be tired ang hungry, so they must find a decent cafe to eat something and spend some time. And be sure: you are not going to be alone! There will be many people like you!

Enjoy Santorini!!!

Don't rush is the main thing .... There are 2 cafes just to the right outside the airport, daresay one will be open.
There should be something open on the main square in Fira town, it's about 200 yd/m from the Fira bus station. First bus from the airport to Fira is 07:25.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

The Lost Continent of Atlantis?

by Jmill42

Around 3,500 years ago, Santorini experienced a massive volcanic eruption that turned an intact island into the reminents we see today. Many think that the island that erupted, and lost forever, was the "Lost Continent of Atlantis." That is speculation, what is know is that across the stretch of water to the south lies Crete. Back then, the Minoan civilization centered at Knossos was in full swing. Scientists tell us that the enormous tidal wave caused by the eruption at Santorini exterminated the civilization on Crete. On my tour, the guide told us that soil specific to Santorini was found at the North Pole, indicating the size of the explosion. Well, all's well that ends well, I say. What was left for us was a beautiful oasis in the Aegean Sea. My first glimpse of the sheer face of Santorini's cliffs. Produced by something so violent, it is now one of the most beautiful islands.

Nea Kameni

Nea Kameni is the biggest (and newest) of the volcanic islands in the middle of the bay.
The boat stops there for 1 hour, time for you to climb to the top, have a quick view and run down before the boat leaves...

Getting Married in Santorini

by om_212

Santorini is a popular place among Europeans (they say especially from Scandinavian countries) to tie a knot. A bride on a spotless white dress and a groom in tuxedo with the Caldera on a background – it does look spectacular… not that much privacy though and kind of rushing process.. during sampling in Santo Wines, I have seen at least tree couples getting married on their terrace, and numerous tourists (including me) taking pictures of them..

Heading to the Beaches?

by Jmill42

If you are going to one of the black sand beaches (Perissa, Kamari, etc.) be aware that the sand can get VERY hot. Obviously, in the middle of summer it will be the worst, and you will definitely NEED a bamboo-type of mat to lay on. Towels will not do. Aloe Vera, Sunscreen 30+ SPF, the norm Lots of water. More than you normally would think. With the black sands sucking in the suns rays towards you, the heat follows, leading you to quicker dehydration and chance for heatstroke or heat exhaustion.

Sorry, I am a physical therapist. I sound like a mom, don't I? Whatever. Stay alive and keep your skin!!

EXO GONIA

by sandysmith

The village Exo Gonia, is a small settlement built at the slopes of Mesa Vouno (the Profitis Ilias mountain). Traditional farming village with several wineries and canaves (cave installations for production and storage of wine). The tiny village is like another world. Quiet, with nice view towards the sea and the flat land where the airport lies. The best view spot is at the church of Agios Charalambos (red roofed church).
