A stroll through Santorini's geographical past
by xuessium
Summarised and extracted from the "Lonely Planet - Greece":
Santorini (Σαντορίνη) is also known as Thera or Thira (Θήρα) and has a most violent past.
Santorini used to be called Strongili (the Round One). At around 1650BC, one of the mothers of all volcanic eruptions, caused the centre of the island to sink when the magma chambers of the volcano gave way, leaving a caldera with high cliffs. Water rushed in to fill up this Caldera. This remaining outer rim fragmented through the ages from further volcanic activities, though the same volcanic actions also contributed to the formation of new islands (Palia Kameni & Nea Kameni) to more or less, eventually leaving Santorini with its current shape.
Santorini's namesake has been attributed to St.Irene, sister of St.Agape and St.Chionia.
You'll be glad to know that volcanic activities have been dormant since the last blow-up in 1956, so for the moment, Santorini is sleeping quietly.
Just only.
Shhhh...........
The Shops & Restaurants of Fira
by Mikebb
For real colour and atmosphere the streets and shops of Fira certainly have plenty and this is one of the attractions of Fira. People are everywhere, particularly when the cruise boats are in port. We were only on Santorini for 3 days and liked the buzz of the busy shops, cafes and streets which would settle down mid afternoon when the cruise boat visitors returned to their vessel.
Honeymoon
by Lilasel
It is no secret that Santorini is one of the most popular destinations for Honeymooners and for weddings too. The reason is obvious. It is because the island is so spectacular and unforgettable and just about anywhere you choose to take your vows you are in an amazing setting. There are a number of companies doing weddings in Santorini. For information on weddings in Greece see www.greecetravel.com/weddings
Light Luggage, Flat Shoes, Camera are a Must here!
by greekcypriot
Carry a light baggage. Your hotel might be on a steep road.
You don't want to carry heavy things under the burning sun here! Depending on the season. During summer wear long cotton dresses or short tops and shorts.
Flat shoes always....the roads can hide traps. It can become slippery in many places. You need the best camera here. Carry an extra battery too. I don't recommend to come to Santorini and go camping. You can find a cheap nice and clean village studio. Locals are very open hearted and you will have the chance to mingle with them and learn more about the island from real locals. A hat and sunglasses always! A bottle of water if you walk.
Avoid carrying documents like your tickets or passports with you. Leave them at the hotel in the safe or lock your suitcase before leaving. Check the door of the hotel if it is locked before you leave. Carry a copy of your passport instead.
Don't carry all your money on you, but carry as much as you think you will need that day.
.......want to regain your youthfulness?

One of the smaller islands off Santorini, with a population of one hermit, is known for it's hot sulfur springs. I took an excursion out to see for myself. Indeed they were warm but I'm still not certain I'm any younger for it.
The guide explained that the hermit, who could be seen the day I was there, has a dog and a herd of goats. His garden supplies him with most everything he needs but apparently he's looking for a wife!
