Lava
Driving around the island you can see the different kind of lava that shaped the ground in the past. The most present is black lava, red lava and green lava. It is very interesting to see how the ground color chages.

I just arrived home from a 2 week vacation in Greece. The second week we stayed on Santorini, in Megalahori at a hotel called Studio Artemis. It is absolutely beautiful there, right on the caldera, the proprieters are awesome people, a young couple who are getting married in December! It is pretty central, with buses and taxis to get you anywhere else on the island. The price is mid range...they do have a web site...make sure you find the one in Megalahori... Congratulations, and good luck!

The earth on Kammeni (Greek for "Burned") is black volcanic lava stones and it is warm due to continuing underground activity. The island is just the tip of a gigantic underwater volcano, which erupted at about 1500 BC, in what is believed to be the most violent known volcanic eruption on earth, resulting in the collapse of most of Santorini into the sea. It is believed that the smoke and ashes from that eruption reached a height of 36 km above the surface of the earth, and that the prehistoric settlement of Acrotiri, at the southwestern tip of the island was buried under more than 40 meters of ash.
A 20-minute walk up the path from the quay will take you to the edge of the volcano, where it definitely is hot and you can have a panoramic view of Santorini from the west.
This fresco was uncovered in the archeological dig at Akrotiri. It shows that this ancient civilization were quite advanced for their time and competed in athletic competitions. A recreation of the fresco is located in the Museum of Ancient History in Fira. You can also find recreations being sold to tourists in shops all over Santorini.
I think Pyrgos is one of the nicest villages on the island. It is situated eight km southeast of Fira. It used to be the capital of the island until early 1800.
This village is built on the slope of a mountain.
Buy a cooking-glove & kitchen towel with the prints of Santorini, or white & red wine with their label, or olives, or ..... and watch the prices!!!
Clothes are extremely expensive, and after looking in some modern shops, not nice after all... You can expect expensive prices!
