athen santorini

by silab

what's the fastest boat from athen to santorini and from which port?
thanks

Re: athen santorini

That would be one of the Hellenic Seaways Highspeeds (4.5 hours) from Piraeus.

Am presuming that reason for wanting fastest boat is because of time factor.
The slower ferries take 8 hours, but the cruise is so relaxing, scenic and comfortable that you should give it a thought. Blue Star ferries leave from Piraeus (in Athens) and stop at 2 other islands (briefly) to offload & load people & cars - so one can have a glimpse of the beauty of these islands too.
The Blue Star ferries are also cheaper, I believe. They have restuarants, indoor & outdoor seating, TV's and in general are really comfortable.

Do you know, there is any left-luggage office on the Blue Star?

Re: athen santorini

Not an office, per se, but a semi-secure baggage area belowdecks near the entrance ramp to the ship. Drop off your bags when you first enter before going above, but keep your valuables with you.

Re: athen santorini

Thank you :) And is it any problem to buy a ticket for Blue Star Naxos at the Pireus port?? If no, where is any ticket-office?

Re: athen santorini

by brotherleelove

Ticket offices are in plain sight close to where the Blue Star ships dock. It's not a problem to buy them there as long as you get there early enough. If your plan is to go in July or August it will be very crowded at the ticket offices so give yourself plenty of time. Better still, if you're staying in Athens buy your ticket at a ticket office in the city near Syntagma Square. If you're coming directly to the ferry port from the airport buy them at the airport from Amphitrion Holidays in the Arrivals Hall.

Yet again thank you for your advice - it's very helpful. I have a flight today at 11 p.m to Athen, so I hope I'll be tomorrow on the island :)

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

Cats and Dogs of Santorini

by cnango

All around Santorini we saw lots of cats and dogs, on the beach, on the Caldera, even in restaurant courtyards. None of the dogs were tied up or on leashes even when they were being walked by their owners. Some were strays but most seemed happy or at least that is what I want to believe. We took the first 3 pictures of these lovely animals in there beautiful settings. I also bought a calendar called the "Cats of Greece" and you can too if you're interested. They sell for under 7 Euros at the International Press Shop in the Main town sqaure in Fira.

Thira

by SirRichard

Thira is the capital of the island and the biggest town. I was there only for an afternoon, to have a beer at a terrace and enjoy the superb views from the cliff.
But I found it as crowded and touristic as Mykonos, Marbella or Cannes. Really didn't feel comfortable there :-(

Walking through the small roads...

by Aggeliki

..is an unforgettable experience because you never get tired. Oia and Fira has the same cycladic arhitecture. White houses between small narrow roads. Of course, any kind of transportation ( becycles, motorcycles, cars, vans ;-)) are forbidden! except donkeys!

THE FLAG

by DAO

The Greek Flag you see today was only officially adopted on 22 December 1978 making it a young flag for an ancient nation. A blue and white striped flag has been around, however, since 1822. There are 9 horizontal stripes that are supposed to stand for the 9 syllables of the Greek patriots' motto:
Ελευθερια η Θανατος (Eleutheria ĂȘ Thanatos), which translates as "Freedom or Death". This is now the national motto of Greece. The phrase came into being during the 400 years of occupation and struggles with the Ottoman Empire. It also has a blue and white cross in the upper left hand corner known as the Hellenic Square Cross. This cross signifies national devotion to the Greek Orthodox Church. The Blue & White colours are reminders of the Hellenic Sea and its endless waves. You will rarely see a Greek Church without the Greek Flag.

Ancient Thira

by 88Starflite

The Egyptian and Roman ruins at the top of the mountain between Kamari and Pressia. It's a must see but be warned that the some may get scared do to the steep mountain road up to the ruins, I like the ride myself. Just make sure the driver had his morning coffee before the drive.
