Travel Tips for Santorini Island

Fira

by snorril

Fira is the capital of Santorini and the largest town. It is very beautiful and very crowded.
The town has numerous restaurants, bars, shops etc.

Characteristic about the towns on the caldera site are all the donkeys. The farmers have long lines of the animals and use them to transport people to/from the harbour. The donkeys have been important transportation in these towns for ages but Fira now has a cable-car that offers tourist a quicker, less smelly alternative albeit not as authentic. My fondest memory of the place is actually from the road between Fira and Oia. We were riding on our scooter after a night out in Oia. It was on the 13th, it was a Friday and we had a full moon. Despite all this we made it in one piece back and enjoyed the magnificent view of Fira bathing in the moonlight.

Lower Fira

by Lilasel

There is a stone staircase of 600 steps that leads down to the harbor of Fira, and to a tour boat that will take you across the caldera to the Nea Kammeni island, or "the volcano", as people call it. This should definitely be on your to-do list in Santorini: you have a chance to visit an actual volcano and swim in hot springs in the sea.

Sunsets in Oia

by cckbp7

If you are coming to Santorini, don't miss out on the incredible sunsets. The best spot to catch them is in Oia at the old castle. Be sure to stick around for about 20 min after the sun sets. That is when the magic really happens. All the tourists clear out and you are practically alone with a beautiful sky of red, orange, pink, and purple.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

by DAO

I always wanted to build one of those rare sports tips with pictures of attractive and athletic women and men playing a fantastic game of Beach Volleyball. I wanted to have 5 great pictures of this event. With my bad luck I ended up with some severely uncoordinated school kids making the game look bad and making a good example of why there should be mandatory sports in schools.

Well the arena and setting on the beach was good. They have ample seating and they play in proper tournaments here.

EPISKOPI GONIA

by sandysmith

Its a bumpy ride up to the village of Episkopi Gonia , also known as Mesa Gonia, not far from the beach resort of Kamari. My thanks to Helga for telling us about this place. This little village has an important beautiful Byzantine church of Panagia Episkopi. The church is considered the best example of traditional ecclesiastical architecture of the island and thus is often visited - it cost just 50 cents to go in and is worth a short detour.
This church has managed to survive various invasions as well as the many earthquakes on the island. It’s good to contrast it with some of the island’s larger and more modern churches - it has an orange tiled roof rather than a blue or white dome. Panagia Episkopi was built in the late 11th Century by Emperor Alexios A’ Kominos. It houses the icon of Panagia Glikofilousa, one of the third most priceless portable icons in the world. Other important icons can be seen in the church, although unfortunately most of the treasures of the church were destroyed in 1915 by a terrible fire and 26 of the finest works were also stolen in 1982 and never to be found. Still worth a look though. Surprisingly photography is allowed as long as no flash is used.
