The lost island of Atlantis
by Lilasel
There is a story thousands of years old about a "lost island" in the Atlantic Ocean. The story was told by the ancient Greeks, and had been handed down from father to son for many generations before the Greek philosopher Plato wrote a famous story about it, about 375 BC.
The island of Atlantis, according to Plato's story was really a series of islands. Imagine in the center a hill, surrounded by a circle of land, then another rings of water and one of land, until there were nine rings of water and nine of land. The islands had been created by Neptune, god of the sea, for Cleito, his beloved. From their children the king and people of Atlantis were descended. The island was very rich and the people content. The city was built of black and red stone; the roofs of the houses were of red copper and flashed in the sun; and there were two beautiful temples, one surrounded by a golden wall and the other with silver walls, golden pinnacles, and a roof of ivory.
In 1967, a city buried by a volcanic eruption in 1500 BC., was found on Santorini. Archaeologists say this might be Atlantis.
Imerovigli
by ania70pl
Imerovigli means day guard. The castle of Scaros is worth a visit. When Venetian leader Marko Sanouthos conquered the island in 1207, he raised the flag on the castle. It was at this point that Thira became known as Santorini (Santa Irene). The castle guarded the western entrance to the island from attacks. The castle had two portions, one called Rocka and the other where Roman nobles and Catholic bishops had their residence. The castle was never defeated during the 600 years of existence.
Easter in Santorini
by greekcypriot
If you want peace and quiet, tradition and beauty come to Santorini during Easter.
Easter is the beginning of the Summer season for Santorini and it is a great Orthodox holiday for the people here. Many Easter customs have been preserved for many years:
The red textiles at the balconies every Maundy Thursday,
the smell of "tsoureki" and "melitinia" a local dessert especially cooked for Easter,
the streets of Pyrgos (a village on the mountain) lighten by thousands of oil-lamps on Good Friday, and
the meeting of the two Epitaphs, in the central square of Fira are only a sample.
We came to Santorini one week before the Greek Easter and it was really what I describe above. Everything was cheaper, even hotels and food.
I don't think I would have liked visiting Santorini during summer with crowds coming and going!
The Akorini Lighthouse
by cnango
Jeff & I rented a car and drove around the island for a day one of the nice spots we saw was on the Southernmost tip of Santorini where the Akorini lighthouse is situated. The lighthouse was built in 1892, stands 10 meters high and is perched on a rocky point covered with white sandstone . It's a nice place to walk with some nearbly caves and of course those amazing panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the distant Caldera to be explored.
