Where to stay and buses in winter

by vanandalan

Hi

My husband and I will be on Santorini for 2.5days from 19th March. I know most things will be closed and weather may be tempermental. I'm not into sunbathing or night life (just good restaurants with possibly a view). My to do list is:
- See the different coloured beaches for photos (I've only seen white sand beaches).
- Boat trip to the hotspring/volcano.
- Walk to Oia from Imerovigli to see the town and sunset

We do not want to hire a car. We are happy to walk, take buses or taxis.

Reading the forums it seems like Imerovigli is a lovely place to stay with good views and walkable to Fira for buses. Would you recommend Imerovigli in winter? Are there many buses in winter? The KTEL website only shows the summer timetable and I assume my guidebook list the summer frequency of buses. Also, is it easy to call a taxi to collect us and take us to the next location?

Thanks

I disagree that Fira from Imerovigli is not walkable, as anyone in reasonably health should be able to do it in 15 minutes tops (I'm pushing 60). On the other hand, I agree that Fira will be a better base in the off season as such skimpy services as are available on Santorini in winter will be more accessible in the larger village.

Bear in mind that the walk from Imerovigli to Oia takes several hours. It took me five hours or so in the company of a fit young hiker, and I forced myself to keep up with her pace. OK, it included one beer break.

There are very few taxis operating there in the winter but they will be glad of your custom. Collect a phone number or two on arrival for eventualities.

Fira is a better area for a tourist during the low season. The season on the island doesn't really start until May and people return to the island in April to get the cobwebs out. Most places is walkable and if you start in Fira , you can walk to your abilities and return home to where the action is. Like they said, bus is spotty because of off season, so if you go somewhere outside Fira, ask and make sure there is a return. If not, there is always a taxi or a nice Greek person that might just give you a lift. (I ask anyone going in the same direction)... Just remember, you are on genuine "Greek time" , everything is leisure and they are not in a hurry for anything.

cheers Tommi X

Thanks for all your advice. I'm now going to look for a hotel in Fira instead. I hope the volcano trip is running.

I agree that its absolutely possible (in fact, pleasant) to WALK fro Imerovigli to Fira. We were there last March, and did the walk twice every day. The scenery is beautiful, and Caldera views from Imerovigli are best.
Plenty of buses and taxis available too.
The weather was perfect for us, not hot and not cold. Just pleasant.
We stayed at Irini Villas. There is a review with photos on my Santorini page.
(click on my name for homepage, where there is a Santorini link)
So yes- I recommend Imerovigli with confidence.

I very much doubt if there will be any volcano trips in March. I suggest you talk to the harbour master in Fira's port. His office is by the waterfront, not hard to find as there are only a dozen or so buildings there. He knows everything about local boats.

In any case, there will be regular boats running from Ammoudi (at the foot of the cliff below Oia) to Thirassia, Santorini's smaller twin. The views there are spectacular, but with a permanent population of 200 it will be even sleepier than Santorini proper.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

THE ISLAND OF SANTORINI

by greekcypriot

We refer to SANTORINI as one island, but actually it is a complex of five islands. Santorini (Thira) is the main island and around it Thirasia and Aspronisi (parts of the ancient Stroggili) and the two volcanic islands Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni.

It was one island named Stroggili (circle in Greek) until about 1645 BC, when the volcano in the middle of the island erupted and Caldera was created. The two volcanic islands appeared much later from various eruptions starting from 157 BC until the last one in the 20th century (1950). I was dreaming of this island every night for weeks after the trip was over.
It can never be forgotten, and I am planning to visit it again soon.

Hike Before You Visit

by 88Starflite

Being in pretty good shape I was surprised at how I tired from all the walking I did while during my first two trips to Santorini. My third trip was better, I was able to hike up ancient Thera and also felt much better over all. I would say it's similar to going on a ski trip when you're out of shape vs. one that you are in shape for. You can't go wrong even if you don't explore that much it's good to be in shape. I would say it's the nights a spent with friends at Arion Bay Hotels bar and also the Boat House Hotels Bar

A view of Imerovigli...

by gmadmax

Imerovigli is close to Fira and looks almost the same! The difference is that Imerovigli is more quiet and peacefull than Fira.I found only one cafe-lunch shop there! The most of houses are very luxury hotels and appartments and the prices are very high!

Donkey ride...

by AndyRG

Poor animals... From one point of view, it can be funny to climb the tiring "footpaths" from Ammoudi to Oia and the small port of Fira to Fira -and the opposite- with their help (for the second direction better choose the cable car).
On the other hand, these donkeys must feel unhappy...

KARTERADOS

by sandysmith

Karterados was our base for 4 nights. This traditional village lies less than 2 Km to the South of Fira - a mere 10 minute walk from our hotel base. Karterados was built inside two rivers, almost invisible from everywhere. It's name means the watching - hiding spot, presumably from pirates. Here you can discover traditional Santorini architecture - rocky houses literally burrowed out of a stream and house’s roofs which are at the identical level with the pavement. In 19th century Karterados evolved into a wealthy and prosperous village and many rich ship-owners had built their mansions here, the crew residing in the rock houses. Today there are several hotel and villas for rental, well served by tavernas (much less expensive than Fira), cosy cafes and supermarkets. The village centre has an attractive windmill too.
