    Sophia Beach Aparthotel, Kos

A very nice one roomed studio apartment with it's own balcony. The room had plenty of space, which is essential to me, I need space. It was twin-bedded with a double sofa bed too. The people in the next room to us had 3 kids so it can obviously accomodate 2 adults and 3 kids. The aircon wasn't the best but at least it had some.
The aparthotel is in Lambi, which is just outside of Kos Town. It took us about 15 to 20 minutes to walk into town, which is fine for us as we like a walk and the walk was pleasant anyway. If you don't like to walk so much the frequent town bus service stops pretty close by.
Also close by are loads of tavernas, bars and a few shops, as well as two excellent beachside clubs, Heaven and Tropical Island. These were great places by day and by night, though still quite quiet at this time of year.

I stayed at the 3*+ Gaia Gardens Hotel in Lambi for 6 nights in early May 2006.

I paid just 22 euros (15 GBP) per night for an en-suite single room and this proved to be superb value for money!

    Location:

This impressive hotel is located in spacious gardens in the beach resort of Lambi on the north-western tip of the island. From the hotel, it is just a 2 minute walk to the main street of Lambi with its large choice of tavernas, bars and shops and just a 5 minute walk to the nearest beach. The harbour of Kos Town can be reached in about 15 minutes on foot.

    Hotel facilities:

The hotel consists of a main building (in which the reception area and dining room are located, as well as a number of guest rooms) and several smaller annexes, each containing a handful of guest rooms, located among the gardens. You may want to bring a torch for getting to the annexes at night.

The reception area is staffed by exceptionally friendly staff who will be happy to assist you with matters such as car hire and booking excursions. There are also safety deposit boxes in the reception for storing your valuables and a TV corner.

Outside, there is a large swimming pool (with a smaller children's pool attached), a children's play area and pool tables. A large terrace with sun loungers and umbrellas surrounds the pool and there are other shaded terraces set back from the pool if you want a break from the sun.

Free car parking is available outside the front of the premises.

    Room facilities:

My single room in fact had THREE single beds in it and was easily spacious enough to accommodate three guests. The room also contained satellite TV (100s of channels from all over Europe, the Middle East and Asia), air conditioning/heating, an outdoor terrace (rooms on upper floors have a balcony), large wardrobes, bedside cabinets, a telephone and a small en-suite bathroom.

The en-suite bathroom contained both a bathtub and a shower attachment. Fresh towels were provided every day.

    Food:

Breakfast and dinner are not included in the room price but can be purchased at a cost of 5 Euros per meal per person per day. There is also a poolside snackbar.

Overall, I had an excellent stay at the Gaia Gardens Hotel and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a hotel close to Kos Town.

However, in order to give a balanced view, I would highlight the following good and bad points:

    Good points:

Room facilities - the room facilities are excellent. Rooms are well-furnished, clean and spacious. On the guest questionaire, one of the questions asks whether the hotel could achieve a 4* rating (from its current 3*+ rating)....and on the basis of its rooms, I believe it could. The only additional item I would have liked is a fridge.

Staff - the hotel's staff are exceptionally friendly. I was always (without exception) greeted with a friendly smile and polite conversation in reception. The staff went out of their way to let it be known that if I needed any help with anything or needed anything in my room that wasn't already in there, then to let them know and they'd sort it out for me. Nothing was too much trouble for them.

    Bad points:

    Ants

I was staying in a ground floor room in one of the garden annexes. I therefore found that quite a few ants got into the room. On a couple of occasions the bathroom floor was crawling with ants. I know this is a common problem in hot countries and I certainly don't hold it against this hotel. In fact, the cleaners seemed to have an effective method of getting rid of them.

    Lack of hot water

The water in my shower never seemed to run completely hot at any time of day or night. In fact, it usually struggled to get warm, never mind hot. This didn't seem to be a widespread problem and may have been specific to my room or the annexe my room was in. The water from the hot tap in the sink always ran hot without any problems.

  • Over pools from main building - Kos
    Over pools from main building
    by zizkov, 4 more photos
Kipriotis Village is one of several Kypriotis properties in the area and is, well, a large holiday village, but a pretty upmarket one. 647 rooms in a variety of styles, from villas and hotel rooms to apartments, with a few rooms in the main building (possibly the disability adapted rooms). I had a good sized room containing a double and a single bed, fridge (not just minibar), writing desk, proper chairs, and a good bathroom (with a clothes drying line). I also had a good sized balcony, which not all had. The otherwise laudable aim of varying the buildings (and it does work to give it a villagey feel) meant that some people had balconies the size of a room, whilst others had pokey balconies that possibly never caught the sun.

Available on packages (I went with Thomas Cook) or bookable direct, with board SC, BB, HB, or AI. Wildly multinational, with British, German, Dutch, Belgian, Italian, Swiss, all Nordic, Czech, and probably a few more nationalities.

Catering facilties on site include main buffet restaurant (with a spare one for high season), bistro, cafe-diner, plush lobby bar, pool and beach bars, dull nightclub (mainly for watering the AIs), fair supermarket, and general shop with tourist stuff, clothes, newspapers, gifts. Also houses the Swedish Consulate. (No, really - I know that sounds strange, but it does!)

Wide range of organised activities, including sports, on site. As well as a 45m curved main pool, and a large childrens pool, a genuine Olympic size pool. This apparently was recently used pre Olympics by the UK and Canadian swim squads, and whilst I was there, the Canadian Paralympic swim team were there.

Multisports courts, tennis courts, watersports, kids club. Small gym and sauna (sauna!, in that heat?) at extra charge. Though I did play football under the blazing sun. (Remember, hydration is very important during exercise! I wish I had remembered),

Day and evening entertainments, though the typical holiday camp style evening entertainment was my one black mark, and being held ouside by the pool, heard everywhere. Still. plenty of places nearby (or Kos Town itself) to avoid it.

This 3 *** hotel is located in Lambi, which lies 3 km outside of Kos town. Lambi is actually one big road, full of hotels, apartments, rental services, bars and restaurants. Many of these places are owned by Dutch, English or Scandinavian people. For those who like to be home away from home, Lambi is a good place. I like to feel the local atmosphere, so I didn't really like Lambi.

Only a few hotels are located at the beach. Apollon hotel lies on the other side of the road and you need to walk about 400m to get to Lambi beach or the beach at the north side of the island.

The rooms are located around the swimming pool. Most rooms have a view of the garden/swimming pool. There are two kind of rooms: basic and superior. Basic rooms don't have a/c, TV or fridge. All rooms have a balcony or terrace, and private bathroom with bath/shower, toilet, hairdryer.

Breakfast is in buffet style. There is, however, not much choice. If you have a half-board meal plan, you will get a 4-course evening meal: soup - small appetizer - choice of 3 main courses of which one is a cold plate - dessert. The food is not bad, but I recommend to eat outside in one of the many restaurants.

Nice swimming pool with separate pool for kids and jacuzzi.
Lovely garden with tropical plants and statues of Greek gods and goddesses.

    Smaragdi Studios: Quiet and comfortable
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Updated By The_Moog on February 18, 2008
  • Smaragdi Stuios are pretty-much what you'd expect from self-catering - twin beds, 2 hotplates, fridge, bathroom with shower & wc, balcony with table and chairs. There is also a dressing table with mirror, bed-side tables with phone and a small table and two chairs in the room. There is a smallish pool (big enough to swim, but not large) with sunbeds around it. The studios are located on the outskirts of Kos town, with views over the surrounding countryside (there wouldn't be any sea views). There are two stories - the first floor is reached by concrete steps, so not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

We found the room clean, with a maid visiting daily. The balcony had a shutter which enabled us to securely lock it while leaving the sliding door open to let in the air, which was really handy.

The lady who was usually on reception spoke very good English and was extremely helpful and friendly - even making a phone-call for us to book horse-riding. There is a bar in reception and a mini-market opposite (which sells the biggest croissants I've ever seen!)

It's about a mile walk into the centre of Kos Town, which was fine for us as we like walking and wanted to explore the town and historical/archaelogical sites. The location means that the stuios are nice and quiet at night - there are a couple of restaurants a few minutes along the road and the beach is only about 5-10 mins walk, but it's off the main run.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

You have to put your key-fob into a slot by the door to activate the electrics - when we first arrived in the middle of the night we thought the lights weren't working!

This place has it all! We flew into Kos late at night and took Taxis to Michalis Studios. Manos, the owner, waited up for us. Manos does everything here to make his guests feel welcome and at home. Although we got in late, he made us drinks at the bar and even offered us food. The next morning he was up at his bar/restaurant. He cooked us a ddelicious breakfast and them helped us set up bike rentals. When we came back he made us lunch and called a taxi for us to get us to Kos Harbor. Manos went above and beyond. Another great thing is that this place is a great deal. We spent a small amount of money realtive to the service we received. The room were clean and neat. This is not a luxury hotel for those that want a "hotel" room, but a great deal for those that are looking for one.

There is also a large swimmingpool and good accomodation all around like recreationground for the children, mini-golf and a beautiful garden.
On the beach is also a beachbar where you can eat and drink all free. Even the sunbeds are free, such like all not-motorized watersport.
At the evening there is a very good animation team.

The rooms were very clean, the food excellent and no limit for all the drinks!
You can enjoy the drinks from 10.00 h. in the morning until 24.00 h. ad midnight.
In the afternoon is it coffetime with cakes.

Apollon: Better to dine elsewhere    Check Rates

  • By SunSeeker011 on May 20, 2008
  • I have been there in July 2007.
Hotel actually deserves 3 stars rating only.
It has great location, besides the sea. However, rooms are average.
The breakfast was not bad, but the dinner was usually uneatable. So it’s better to skip it and dine elsewhere, preferably in one of the many restaurants in the downtown.
The dinning room was always overcrowded. The dirty plates and cups were usually left on the tables for a long time after the previous guests have been gone. Waiters were basically dragging like old cats and were not very helpful.

  • This was an Aparthotel, which meant that all the rooms were apartments but the service was like that onf a hotel - the best of both worlds I thought!

Really pretty landsacping and although the rooms were basic they were comfortable and very spacious.

With large balconies and a poolside bar much more than we had even hoped for when we booked this site unseen!
