"Ippokrateia" series of cultural events
by kastoriani
The "Ippokrateia" is a series of events such as photo exhibits, painting exhibits, concerts, dance performances, etc. that take place in Kos during the summer. There are bronchures with the schedule and other information circulating in the main town. If you plan on attending however, make sure to confirm that the event is actually taking place. I rushed to the Castle one evening to watch a show that was listed in the bronchure and there was nothing going on. The door was locked and there was no announcement or anything else posted as if the event was never planned. I never found out what happened.
Marina Restaurants
by steventilly about Various Places
Kos Marina is a very pleasant spot if you like yachts and nautical types. The basin is filled with yachts of all shapes and sizes - there's some money here that's for sure - and the marina facilities are first rate. There's a couple of food & drink shops, chandlers merchant, a host of cafes & restaurants and even shower facilities. We stopped here a couple of times on our treks along the Psaladi seafront, but only for drinks. The food looked good, and a decent price, but we were never there at a suitable time. Frappes
Agora
by sandysmith
Behind the Mosque of the Logia are the excavations of the agora or old market place - parts of which date backt o the 4th century B.C. Much of this area was only revealed after the quake in 1933, including the ancient harbour, a Temple to Aphrodite and a 5th C Christian Basilica. During our visit restoration and further excavation were still taking place so we just looked from the low perimeter walls - much can be seen this way though. Further exploration rewards with more detail - like mosaic floors and crusader crosses in the stones (see pics)
A Day-trip to Kos from Bodrum, Turkey
by SurfaceTravel
This was a pedestrian day trip via ferry from Bodrum in Turkey. We split our time between Kos Town and the Asciepion. In town we saw the Hippocrates Tree, still alive since its namesake's time, 377 BC. We wandered through the ancient agora (700 BC - AD 500), visited the Archaeological Museum, and did some souvenir shopping. In the afternoon we took a taxi out to the Asciepion, an ancient religious sanctuary, a healing centre, and a medical school lead by Hippocrates, the father of medicine. There are amazing views of the island and across to Turkey from the upper part. See the tip for more photos.
