Visiting places around Kos island - I'm looking for advices :)

by Kumoszka

Hello everybody!

Next week I'm going to Kos, I would like to visit islands such as Nissiros, Kalymnos and Telendos and I would like to go to Bodrum also.

1. Could you give me some advices according to travel agencies?

2. Should I buy organized trips or maybe, especially to Bodrum, it will be enough to buy ticket for some ferry? Do you got some information about it?

3. What do you think about travelling to Kalymnos on scooter from Kos to Mastichari and than taking that scooter on board?

I would be very happy to receive your advices.

Thank you
Kumoszka

Hi Kumoszka,

I've visited Bodrum and a variety of islands from Kos during a couple of visits to the island.

Here's my advice for what it's worth:

1. There are loads of travel agencies in Kos Town (and also in the beach resorts) where you can book either tours or just ferry tickets. Part of the seafront road near the harbour and some of the surrounding streets are dominated by small travel agencies. Each of these has boards outside with details of trips, costs and timetables and the price will be pretty much the same wherever you book.

2. Personally, I prefer just booking a ferry ticket and travelling independently. I also find that this is much better value (and you'll see so much more!) than going on an organised trip. I visited Nisyros on an organised trip, but I only followed the tour for the volcano part of the tour and then wandered off on my own once I was back in the main town. I visited Bodrum, Kalymnos, Telendos and Leros independently. There are a few hydrofoils and pleasure cruises to Bodrum every morning.....and a few returning to Kos Town every afternoon and evening. It is very easy to travel there independently and the journey by hydrofoil only takes 30 minutes or so.

3. You can take your scooter on board the boat from Mastihari to Pothia (Kalymnos) without any problems. However, you won't be able to take your scooter across to Telendos from Kalymnos. To get to Telendos, you need to catch a small boat from Myrties, and these boats are passengers only, so you'll have to leave your scooter at Myrties when you cross to Telendos. Telendos is tiny, so you'll be able to see everything on foot anyway!

Enjoy the Dodecanese islands!!

1. The most useful travel agent in Kos town is 'Hermes travel', who are agents for all the ferries. A large number of others only do some of the ferries/hydrofoils. They are located near the harbour behind the City bus office one of a group of 4-5 next door to each other.

Nissiros - From Kos the 'Panagia Spiliani' runs Mon-Sat at 15:00, returns at 07:30 ish, It's the island 'shopping ferry'. The ANES ferry 'Proteus' about 3x/week, plus a couple of larger ferries. Also there is a daily ferry from Kardamena Kos to Nissiros.

Kalymnos - There about 3 ferries/hydrofoils per day Kos town to Pothia on Kalymnos plus 3-4 per day from Mastichari to Pothia. There is a bus connection to Myrties where a taxi boat goes across to Telendos (no roads) frequently.

2. Excursions from Kos to Bodrum are a waste of money the ferries are expensive for such a short distance, (better to go to Turkey for a few weeks). No surprise that virtually any travel agent will sell you a ticket.

Travel Tips for Kos

Hiking Dikeos

by kastoriani

The hike up Dikeos to the little church of "Christos" which is the highest point of the whole island (~700m). It's good if you have some kind of vehicle that can go through uphill dirtroads. Follow signs to the village of Zia. Drive through the village, past the tourist strip and follow signs to Kefalovrisi. Shortly passed Zia you will have to turn on a dirt road. Stay on that dirt road for as far as you can. You'll pass a few houses on the way, the Kefalovrisi tavern, and a couple of small churches. You'll see a sign indicating the beginning of the hiking trail pointing to "Christos" on your left. The rocky trail is fairly well marked (follow red arrows) and in fairly good condition. Hiking boots and good physical condition are highly recommended. It's a good 2 hour hike each way, parts of it through trees (i.e., shade). The view from Christos is amazing. Many locals hike up there and spend the night during the chapel's festivities.

Therma springs

by kat-m

The hot springs are amazing, they are supposed to have healing qualities. We went, I suppose at the wrong time of day, as the water really is hot and the daytime heat combined was a bit too much. If I was to return to Kos I would make the effort to go at night.

Defterda Mosque

by sandysmith

Also in the main square of Kos town is the18th century Defterdar Mosque - pictured here. Its still used by the 50 Muslim families, who live mostly in nearby Platani town, but its not open to the public - but you can enjoy a drink and some shade in the cafes outside it.
For our OCT 2008 visit we spent quite a few hours in this square at one of the many cafes in the warm afternoon sunshine just enjoying the views and relaxing after some sightseeing. The minaret is lit up at night too. The nearby market is good for spices and Greek delight - some of the best prices too.
