Travel Tips for Kos

Side Streets

by sandysmith

Even within the centre of Kos Town there are narrow alleyways to explore just off the squares - you will soon find scenes just like this...and for our visit in May the colours of the trees were wonderful. This minaret was near to the western excavations and I think may stand on the site of the old acropolis.

Kos Harbour

by zizkov

Kos Harbour is the focus of the town. Flanked by the Venetian Fortress on on side (with the berth for ferries to Turkey below) and another quay (pictured) where a lot of the tiny fishing boats tie up. The central area is mostly occupied by the tour boats, cruisers or wooden, masted vessels. As they are generally sailing during the day, the best time to see them is evening, when they are touting (in a fairly laid back way) for the next days business. Lots of bars/restaurants on the shore side.

Ferry sailings are available to quite a few Greek destinations (mostly leaving incredibly early) and for a variety of excursions to nearby islands)

Touring yachts also berth here, so you may even see some stars! Reportedly, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston sailed in the week before I stayed, and the week before an enormous yacht with an on deck supermodel party was in town, believed to be Jack Nicholson's.

The little white crenellated building in the first pic, I thought looked like some quaint bygone harbour hq, maybe now a museum? Nope, it's the Kos water authority.

There is another marina/commercial harbour about 1 km east of the harbour, but entry is restricted, and it didn't look very exciting anyway.

Castle Visit

by sandysmith

OK we decided to vist the castle before any other ruins around town as this closes at 2.30pm - it also meant a late lunch! Entrance is only 3 euros and well worth it, even if just for the views over the town and harbour. This castle - Neratzia Castle and the one across the coastline at Bodrum formed a defence for Rhodes.

Kos, Greece

"Kos, Dodecanese Islands, Greece"

I spent a week in Kos in May 2002, staying in the laid back resort of Mastihari.

I arrived for the first week of the holiday season and the island was just waking up from the off-season. Tavernas and bars were just opening up and many were advertising for staff for the summer months.

The long, sandy beach was practically empty, the sun was hot, but the sea was still cold.

I spent a day in Kos town, the capital of the island. The town has an impressive harbour, a castle and numerous bars, tavernas and shops.

Mastihari was convenient as it is where the ferries leave for the neighbouring island of Kalymnos. I also took a ferry to Nisyros for a day trip, and to Bodrum in Turkey for another daytrip. There are also ferries and hydrofoils to other islands within the Dodecanese and further afield.

In the summer months, the island is much more lively with holidaymakers from all over the world. The resort of Kardamena is particularly busy - even in May, there were numerous tourists and the resort already appeared to be in full swing (well, compared to Mastihari at least).

I much preferred Mastihari to Kardamena - it is much more relaxed with authentic Greek tavernas, a handful of bars and a much less crowded beach.
