Just show up
You can mostly just show up on Patmos (minus maybe the very peak season, but even then) and find some accommodation in Skala

Hotel Villa Zacharo: **hotel with *****owners
Although the hotel is located very close to the port of Skala the owner of the hotel Zacharo Koutlaki picked us up and dropped us off at the ferry boat. It is surrounded by terraces (shadowed as well) gardens and flowers, some of the rooms have a view of the Monastery of St. John on the hill above Chora.
Skala with its restaurants, shops, travel agencies is on walking distance and there is a bus stop (for a visit to the cave and monastery) just in front of the hotel.
Our room was basic, but spacious and very clean, with all amenities (TV, airco, telephone); the bathroom is a little bit small. We had a balcony with view of Skala and surrounding area.
Breakfast is OK and you can ask what you do want to eat; if possible the family Koutlaki will manage to fulfil wishes.
We got a discount on the normal price and paid € 35,- for a double room per night; breakfast is € 5,- per person.
Unique Quality: Hotel Villa Zacharo is just a small hotel with only 8 rooms.
The owners are so friendly and helpful; they did their utmost to make our stay unforgettable. And we have to admit: they succeeded !!

Katerina Pansion: Kindness personified
There are two sets of "Katerinas" in Skala - Katerinas Rooms and Apartments and Katerina's Pansion - we stayed at the latter.
Maria Panayiotakis has two establishments - one in Netia (studios and rooms) and 3 rooms above her house at the top end of Konsolato. This is where we stayed - our room was huge and well kept, although simple. The 3 rooms share two bathrooms (one with full bath), although when we visited Maria's daughter Katerina was occupying one room and us the other so we effectively had a private bathroom. They also share a beautifully airy marble floored "saloni" with cane furniture - lovely to sit in in either bad or very hot weather.
Marvellous!
Update - 2008 - no change, except that the dogs weren't around! :(
Unique Quality: The sunsets over Hochlakes were amazing, as was the view to the monastery, but what makes this accommodation is Maria herself. She is an incredibly hospitable and kind lady, who would appear with Greek coffees for us, or water and a "spoon sweet". You know that you've settled in somewhere when you know the names of the dogs (woof to Iohanna and Irma!)
Our room was cleaned EVERY day and it's the first time in Greece that I haven't had to buy a loo roll during my stay!)

Hotel Skala: Beginner's Luck
Having no reservations, I got off the boat and walked down the main street. Right away Hotel Skala appealed to me because of the quaintness of the vines leading into the hotel. It was a wonderful stay. The location is central (perfect!), the hotel owners (Greek-English run) are fun and helpful, and it offers anything you could want!
Unique Quality: Pool, library, bar, gallery, seaside location, close to restaurants and shopping areas. Can't find much better!
