More about Blue Bay
Booked 5* Blue Bay Deluxe Complex, more like 2* Dismal Complex!!!
Well we booked to stay at the Blue Bay Deluxe Complex through Lastminute.com, it was rated on their website as a 5* AI complex, but when we arrived it certainly was not! We realised 2 days before take off that we were not actually staying in the main Blue Bay Hotel which has been given some good write ups on here and is listed by most tour operators as 4*, but at the Blue Bay Sunlands Studio/Apartment block, which is round the back of the hotel (out of sight, out of mind...springs to mind!). If your booking reads ROH regarding your room, it probably means you will be sent across to the rear of the hotel behind the waterpark.
The block was 2* at best, rooms were dismal and dingy, you get more luxury at a Travelodge in the UK! We arrived late at 1am, so got a taxi from the airport costing around 10euros, we were then escorted down a dirt track to the Sunlands complex, the man on reception was rude, arrogant and damn right unhelpful all the time we were there. On arriving at our room there was a rusty old shopping trolley parked outside...we later realised that the maids use this to move the dirty washing around!
We had not been advised at all about the planes and the noise is unbearable, you can't speak or even hear the tv over the top of it. On most days there is between 30/50 planes going over. You do get used to it, but it takes a few days! Also you get woken u pso early due to screaming kids, the very keen maids (8.30am to tidy your room!!) and extremely paper thin walls!
On a upside the food was nice, restuarants were clean and tidy, waiting staff were a little too keen to rush you along and clean up after you for my liking, food was very samey (meat, pasta, salad every day, not much greek), lots of variety though and very fresh. Drink was not so good, watered down coke and the beer was awful.......stuck to water most of the time, as at least you knew what you were getting! You could have as much as you liked though and just helped yourself, same with the ice cream.
With regard to activities at the main hotel (which you can use even if you stay at Sunlands) was always buzzing and everyone seemed to be having a good time, lots for the kids to do. I personally thought the animation staff were a little "in your face" and were always pestering you to join in and get involved (even if you had your face in a book!!!).
Pool at the main hotel was lovely, can't really say the same for the Sunlands 2 pools, they were always full of bugs and leafs, only ever saw it be cleaned once whilst we were there. It was just like a hole in the floor, no proper drainage etc. like the main hotel. Always plenty of sun loungers though, which was better then the main hotel where people were perched everywhere!
We were basically mis-sold and we are very disappointed and will be taking it up directly with our tour operator (Fleetway Travel) and will be demanding a refund.......we paid for 5* AI luxury and got 2* basic accommodation.....wouldn't have minded if we had paid a 3rd of what we did!
In conclusion its cheap and cheerful, its close to the airport and Rhodes town if you want to venture out, foods ok, drinks ok...but its not 5* luxury, which is what we were sold!
Rooms nice but small and the outside areas need updating
We have just arrived back from a week at the Blue Bay with Thomas Cook (last week of August). I travelled with my wife; son aged 3 and in laws aged in their 70’s.
Not really much nearby to walk to. Rhodes Old Town is a must – go there at night and Lindos is worth a visit. You feel a bit imprisoned in the resort as you really need a taxi to get out of the immediate vicinity.
The rooms we stayed in (131) had been refurbished fairly recently with plenty of storage and a nice comfortable bed. The bathroom had a great shower and clean towels were delivered every other day. The rooms were quite small with a bedroom area with a double bed and a separate lounge area which if you have kids converts to 2 single beds. There is a TV but only BBC World and the news channels are in English. Maids come every day except Sunday and the rooms were kept fairly clean but I have experienced better. There is a safe in each room but it costs 18 euros a week for the key.
There are several pools in the complex and surrounding hotels but we used the main pool in front of the Blue Bay hotel block. There are nowhere near enough sun loungers to go round and if you’re not up by 8am reserving them then you don’t stand a chance till the end of the day. The beds are locked up at night and opened up at 8am so be quick!
The kids pool is good but could have been cleaner – the whole pool area needs updating – the tiles are slippy and the water drains all over the place so watch you books and sun bags don’t get wet!
The poolside bar stocks ice cream all day which is great for the kids and there are activities throughout the day such as water aerobics, darts, quiz’s etc.
Snacks can be found in the Snack Bar from about 11am till late afternoon with a different selection as the days goes on. The snack bar could do with updating as its dark and dirty with a few "pay for" rides and machines and a pool table.
The beach is lousy – dirty grey sand that that looks like building sand – the wind is quite strong on this side of the island which is great for watersports such as wind surfing and kite surfing but not great for swimming – most days it looked fairly dangerous. There are no life guards on patrol for either the pool or beach so bear this in mind with the little ones
There is only one restaurant in the Blue Bay which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food is very good – albeit it never red hot, but there is a microwave and our family used this at every meal! The room is hot and frantic at all mealtimes – we always got a table for 5 but they are limited in number.
There is a good choice for lunch and dinner for meat eaters but vegetarians will struggle – even the potatoes had meat in them!
Breakfast was the most disappointing with the eggs as hard as nails and the bacon and sausage not the best. Plenty of drinks to choose from at mealtimes with beer and wine on help yourself and squash and fizzy drinks for the kids.
The restaurant at the Sun Land Hotel behind the water park (I will come to that later!) is better than the Blue Bay if you are looking for somewhere quieter. The food is the same each day as the Blue Bay restaurant but much more relaxed and cool – with an outside eating area which makes a change – definitely give this a go!
On the subject of drinks this is where the all inclusive was a let down. The beer was great but the wine was almost undrinkable unless you watered it down with lemonade. The spirits were rough and there was no tonic - the lemonade was very sickly and sweet (like traditional lemonade) and there was no whisky.
The main selections were rum, brandy, vodka and gin - all served in plastic glasses that were so rough around the edges that they almost gave you mouth ulcers. I suggest getting a glass from the restaurant and using that of an evening to save your lips!
Nightly shows put on by the entertainment staff which was as you might expect. Billy and Jimmy try hard but the shows are not particularly entertaining – Tuesday night was Greek night which they charged you £15 each for a barbeque and Greek music (which was cheeky) and we were told it was rubbish. The other daily shows included miming to Sister Act the musical – miming to Jungle Book the musical and the usual “humiliate the audience” games. The kids disco was great though and went on for a good hour.
We got 4 free entry days here (depends on who you travel with First Choice got in free every day). We only went for one day and only stayed an hour. There are 6 slides and a Pirate Boat for the little kids. Don’t base your holiday at the Blue Bay on the water park alone as it’s not great. The water was freezing – so much so that our son refused to go on the Pirate Boat. You get free non alcoholic drinks in there and sandwiches – but you can come and go as you like. One good thing is there are plenty of sun loungers but the outlook is not great!
In summary we enjoyed our week – I would not give it 4 stars only 3 – the common areas need updating and they are tired and dirty – with graffiti on the furniture, ripped cushions etc.
The outside areas are in need of updating also with broken floor tiles in the pool etc. The entertainment is poor in the evening.
On the plus side the rooms had good storage and were comfortable (albeit small) – the food was good and there was plenty of activities to do during the day.
What a dump
Well what can i say the place is a dump. First the taxi ride from the airport was terrible we were the only people he had to pick up as we had a suitcase smashed open when we landed we had to report it no he wanted to take our cases and we make our own way to the hotel with 9 of us he got no where
Next problem we had asked for 4 rooms together to say they had the booking for nearly 11 months when we got there they put us on different floors when we complained they said they had not enough notice on the rooms. We were dumped in the dungeons where they put all English it was only after my floor collapsed that they moved me up to the second floor what a view straght on to a concrete wall
Next was the food totally boring and transported on a pickup that takes the laundry away and the bins in the bathroom away u go to the Blue Bay and u sweat in the heat no air con in their restaurent
Example 1 breakfast ants with cereals when complained told to eat toast and the English breakfast
Lunch never went was told it was repeats of last nights dinner
Example 2 dinner started at 6.30 we went at 7.45 and some stuff had run out if we wanted we could walk to the Blue Bay if we wanted to eat enough said i think
The entertainment was poor u had to be in the seating area at 6.30 to have a seat if not the blue bay people took all the seats then when u were in your seats u had a 100 metres walk to the bar and the entertainment was for the Germans and the Dutch and Belguims not the English
Day time was water polo French bowls or darts thats it .
The beer was terrible served in tupperware that cut your lips because the rims were that rough everything was served in the tupperware shorts soft drinks water
The hotels own a theme park in between the two hotels and u have to pay to enter there for the day even though its an all inclusive resort
your best bet is to go in to the centre or get a taxi cheap enough and go to Ixia for the nights out one bar u have to go to is the Fatman Slims for your Sunday lunch and try the Fatmans Burgers Massive say hi to Ray and the gang hire a car and see the Island dont stay in the resort u will go mad
Good value for money
We stayed there in June, 2006 and found it a pretty good deal for the money we spent (2,060 euros for 2 adults and 2 children, 4 and 9, all inclusive, 15 days). Our family room was nice and clean, 2 separated rooms and a bathroom, although all a bit small. But we did not mind, most of the time we were outside as the weather was very good. The room deserved the 3-star rating, but the outside facilities were in a desperate need of refurbishment, 2 stars at the most.
The swimming pools are pretty fine, 25m main pool at the hotel, children pool, and extra pools at the appartments and at Sunland Resort, which may be used as well. Although the main pool was used by local children for swimming courses after 6pm, no chance for guests to use it for evening swimming.
Due to the near airport, the planes were landing just 100-200 meters above our heads! Some people might find it disturbing, our kinds found it exciting at the beginning, but it got a nuisance after a couple of days, to be honest. We knew about this in advance, so we could not complain.
Animators were OK. Very friendly, always in action. And I understand they need to sell their CDs and tickets for the evening programmes to get some extra bonus. They speak English and German, some French and Dutch. They offered beach and pool volleyball, darts, boccia (petangue), water-polo, football and many more. The kids loved the evening discos.
We did not use the beach very much. But be prepared for windy conditions, the hotel is located on the western coast of Rhodes. But if you like swimming or relaxing in the waves, it is perfect.
The meals were fresh and well prepared. The second week, there was some repetition in the menu, but all in all, we were satisfied. We are not too picky though.
With all inclusive, we had free towels and pool/beach chairs incl. sunshades. Ice cream for the kids was also included. Drinks were served into plastic glasses, standard in this category, I guess.
Do not miss a trip to the City of Rhodes, especially the walk on the city walls. It takes place only twice per week, at 2pm, so plan your trip well. Ask your representative for the days of week, when these tours takes place, I cannot recall it, sorry.
An a trip to Lindos is a must, too. At the best by boat from City of Rhodes. Get offers directly at the harbor during your trip to the City. You can save up to 50% compared to your travel agency.
holiday of a lifetime
well we stayed their 3 times last year, twice in 05,3 times in 04,this hotel is situated with beautiful surroundings, food isnt the highlight of the day, but eatable, staff are very friendly, a unique class of entertainment, days and evenings, and to some holidaymakers i might be known as the real mr blue bay or big sexy belly to others, this place offers you the most relaxing holiday you could ever wish for,and it can be fun if your willing to take part in the activities, their is no animosity towards other foreign holidaymakers like in other hotels, we all mix and make friends iam happy to say i have made as many german friends as i have english, taxis are very competitive 10 euro into rhodes town, i hope this explains a lot , if any doubts dont hesitate to contact me, but remember one thing, it doesnt matter how many reviews you read, your holiday is how you make it no one else
Sunny, funny and good for your money!
We have recently returned from our first holiday at the Blue Bay Hotel, and it wont be our last.
The hotel was immaculately clean. The hotel staff were excellent and spoke perfect English. The Animations (entertainment) team provided excellent, non stop activities and shows throughout the day and evening to suit all ages. And if you werent up for the games, they dont pester you, yet still drop by for a chat between their activities. Even after a long day, they still come and have a drink with you even when their shifts are over. They make you feel like old friends!
The rooms were small, but with plenty of storage space and beautiful views. They were cleaned every morning to an excellent standard.
The food was wonderful, plenty of choice (although not much English food, but then again, we were in Greece so it is to be expected!) My husband, my 15 month old daughter and I enjoyed every food option, although my sister, who is a fan of English junk food, stuck to chips, bread, pizza and chicken for most of the week! There was a supermarket within 2 minutes walk if you do need to sustain a fix of crisps and chocolate!
During the day there is the main pool and bar to relax around, which has 3 smaller pools to suit the younger children or a wonderful water park with huge adult slides and a great pirate ship to keep the kiddies entertained. There is also an indoor play room right by the pool with activities to keep the little ones out of the sun for a while - my daughter and I had great fun painting while in our bikinis!
The pool area is right on the beach - the beach isnt the nicest ive been to, but there is that many other things to do, you dont get time to spend there anyway.
There are regular buses into the local towns and some of the villages are in walking distance.
Of an evening, you can either sit in a quiet lounge or sit in the bar for the entertainment. The all inclusive serve as late as you like. My sister and I enjoyed that on many evenings while my husband took part in shows on stage! And we all enjoyed dancing with my little girl at the kids minidisco!
What more can i say, we had a wonderful holiday and would definately reccomend it to anyone. Your holiday is what you make of it, but this place really helps.
Thanks to Billy, Mikela, Pepper, Cody on animations and to George at the pool bar for helping make our holiday so memorable!
What a wonderful Holiday
We have not long returned from our holiday at Blue Bay Hotel, and we had a wonderful time!
The animation team, who provided the entertainment were all very friendly and welcomed you to join in with all the activities which were non-stop during the day! The day time activities included volleyball, water aerobics, darts challenges, French bowls and many many more.
The night time shows were also very entertaining, some better than others. The guests were always asked to get involved, as did my Brother-in-law who was chosen many time to go on stage. At the start of the night, all the children were called on stage to join in with the mini disco, this my niece, who is 15 months old loved and so did many of the adults included myself and my sister!
The Rooms were very clean. Cleaners would came every morning. The rooms were small, but the view was brilliant.
There was a wide choice of food. Not much of the choice was English food, but then again, we were in Greece so this was totally understandable.
There is the main pool and out door bar to relax around. There were also 3 smaller pools to suit the younger children. There was also the all inclusive ice-creams which was open along with the bar till 6 every night.
There was also the choice of the water park, with huge waterslides for adults and lots of different activities for younger children, including a pirate ship and different water splashing tubes.
Also for the younger children, was a little playroom, just off the pool were they could go and play n paint!
The beach is right off the pool. The beach isn’t the nicest, and is very sandy and the shore line is pebbly... but, this did not affect us as we only used the beach when I and my brother-in-law played volleyball with the animation team.
The town of Rhodes was wonderful. As you walk down the street you have many waiters trying to attract you to their restaurant to eat, but this was not a problem as they were all very friendly. There were regular buses to the town, and in the other direction there was a little village with many shops which was within walking distance. At the end of the drive there was a little shop were you could get anything you may need without having to walk too far.
Of an evening, there was entertainment in the bar starting at roughly 8.00 and lasting till about 11. Even once entertainment was finished, the bar staff still served the all inclusive as late as you like, and the animation team stayed as late as you and had a few drinks with you after the end of their shift.
A massive thank you to all the staff, including George at the pool side bar, Billy, Baboo, Pepper, Nicky, Cody and Mikaela for making the holiday even more enjoyable and fun!!!
We all had a wonderful holiday at Blue Bay Hotel. One week was defiantly not long enough and we would love to go back again!
Conned tour operator saw us coming
Booked through Imperial Holidays and You Travel. Told it was a 5 star complex. That was the first catch, when we arrived we at the Blue Bay Hotel it looked very nice but we soon found out that we were not staying there. We were ushered out to the most grotty building I have seen this was called Sunland Studios and apartments and was part of the "complex". It was awful and probably 2 star accommodation with glass doors in the foyer that were all smashed. I was horrified and tried to demand to be put into the main hotel but all the rep and the hotel would say was we had a ROH view - this seemingly means round of house and you are not in the Blue Bay at all. You could use the facilities at the Blue Bay but sadly this did not include the rooms. There was a restaurant providing a smaller selection of the food available at the main hotel but only a tiny grotty little bar was set up beside the reception. This closed at midnight and at no time were you allowed to take a drink out of the bar to your room or otherwise. The holiday was totally ruined so if you are thinking of booking beware you most likely will not be getting what you have paid for.
Great For Famlies & Plane Spotters
Firstly I would say get a taxi to the hotel from the airport only 10 minutes away & cost about 11 euros, as you walk out of the arrivals there must be a least 50 taxis there we got one straight away, we landed just after 2pm & was in the pool for 3pm.
When you arrive at the hotel the reception area is lovely very clean & the staff are very helpful we were checked in about 5 minutes (another advantage of a taxi you don’t arrive with lots of other people). We were in room 350 this was at the rear of the hotel but had a wonderful view of the mountains & the sea.
Pool area is big lots of sunbeds but unless you are early risers don’t expect to get a sunbed after 9am, most mornings would be there for 7.30am to grab a bed before breakfast & sometimes they where all gone!!! The beach is a 1-minute walk from the pool area, very pebbly & lots of stones going into the sea.
There is the main buffet restaurant where breakfast & the evening meal was served, found the food ok, plenty of choice - fish - meat salads, & even a special section for children which had chicken nuggets sausages chips etc. Just by the pool area was the main bar where you helped yourselves to tea, coffee soft drinks & beer, there was a bar where you could get shorts. This was also where lunch was provided, & afternoon snack & then snacks late at night. The animation team where very good get people entertained all day if that is what you like doing, they would come around & ask if you wanted to take part if you declined they just left you alone, there also seemed to be a good kids animation team. Also of an evening they kept them entertained for about an hour with a disco etc.
Now for the negatives – there is a main bar opposite the buffet restaurant but this is not part of the all inclusive package, apparently cocktails are supposed to be half price if you order one & you are there AI but we where charged the full price 5 euros each. For your drinks of an evening there is limited seating area by the main hotel, & the walk to the serving bar is across from the pool & down by the beach (where you get your lunch from) not a major problem more of an inconvenience don’t understand why the main bar just couldn’t be used.
Now the aeroplanes…….. As we are so close to the airport you would expect to see a couple of planes but some days they where flying right over the top of the hotel every 15 minutes (not all days like this) - & I mean right overhead when they go past if you are talking to someone you have to stop until the plane has passed, as you can’t hear what they are saying because of the noise.
Overall a nice hotel with emphasis on children entertainment & activities.
not what you expect of all inc holiday
nice looking hotel rooms clean we stayed 1 week not once did we have hot food, luke warm air con in resturant is not turned on until july sweating over your food, there were 3 bars 1 soft drink bar 1 snack bar which only provided local drinks and the main bar which you had to pay for all the drinks we went all inclusive so expected our drinks to be provided the entertainment was the same each day games by and around the pool night time entertainment was for children until 11. the only evening entertainment was 2 nights at the payin bar someone singing. it was discribed as slight aeroplane noise, the planes were coming right over the top of the hotel almost every 10 mins wed and sun were more frequent.when we phoned home we were asked if we were on the end of the runway. the hotel had a waterpark when we went there a sign stated residents 10 euro so like fools we payed it was only on our 5th day while speaking to other guests we were told that we had a free pass in reception. the hotel was situated in the back of beyond. to keep ourselves sane we had to get taxi,s or buses to other parts of the island .all the drinks were served in plastic beakers apart from the resturant .the only food i liked was at the childrens bar but his stated children ONLY .the only good thing about this holiday was the staff were excellent that we had only booked 1 week and the weather was beautiful. This was also the opinion of other travellers. OH one last thing we were charged 5* rating but learned the hotel was 4* our advise if you got children and want something VERY QUIET NOTHING TO SPEND MONEY ON THIS WOULD BE OK FOR YOU !!!!!!!!

Moving to Rhodes 2009
We are moving from the UK to Rhodes in June 2009. Will it be cheaper to send household items by courier service or freight forwarding company ?
Re: Moving to Rhodes 2009
can i come with you PLEASE
Seriously though it all depends on how much you want to take with you
You can get estimates from the Net for freight forwarding and courier services by googling them
If you don't intend to take much look at buying a cheap 7.5tonner and drive it down yourself ( if its a viable option)
Wishing you every good luck for the move
