It's hot - damned HOT!
by M0B1US
Good morning Rhodes! ;-)
When we were in Rhodes there was a heatwave going on and the temperatures were topping 40 degrees celsius! It was 43 in Marmaris and rumoured to be 47 at the acropolis of Lindos!!!
Still, there are things you can do to avoid these conditions - such as not turning up in high season for example!
Other things you can do is spend as much time in the vicinity of aircon units as possible and drink LOTS of water - always drink lots of water!
One thing Rhodes has plenty of is street taps such as this one in The Street of the Knights in the Old Town - and I put this one to good use! :-)
Stegna
by sandysmith
Just behind the town of Archangelos (take the road towards the coast for a couple of Kilometres) is the purpose built resort of Stegna. Good facilities and choice of tavernas but still retaining a quiet peaceful air. We visited here the day after the downpour we had iduring our stay in Oct 2006 so the beach was just recovering from the debris and mud. The beach side tavernas and B&B places looked charming and a great place for a mid moring drink, just sitting enjoying the vistas and a stroll along the promenade. This is another place that would be good to come to for a chill out week.
Faliraki water park
by FinElina
In Faliraki town, about 15 kilometers from Rhodes city, there's this great water park. A free bus drives from Rhodes city centre straight to Faliraki water park.
The park has several activities: tube slides, mattress slides, a gym pool, wave pool, river rafting plus some bars and fast food services and chairs for sunbathing. Swim suits, water proof shoes (like diving shoes that you can use in the slides too) because the asphalt is burning your bare feet!
Remember water-proof sun-cream because you'll easily get burn in the water and the sunshine. A water proof bag (like what you can carry in your neck) for money and the locker key.
Prasonisi
by sandysmith
Although off the beaten path being at the far southern tip of Rhode this is a popular place to see as its great for sandy beaches with two seas to choose from! Here the Aegean Sea meets the Med at cape of Akra Praso and at certain times of the year this sandbar can be walked across to reach the far tip of the headland. Great views as you approach too from the coastal road - worth stopping for a picture. That sand looks good enough to drive over but take care as it is quite soft in places and danger of being stuck in the sand. Its fairly safe to park cars about halfway across but unless you have a jeep (hard work even for them) DO NOT drive all the way across up the hill on the other side - path is very stony and rutted. Its a pleasant enough stroll (uphill in heat though) but worth it for the views. There's not many places in the worls where you can dip your toes in two different seas in the space of a few mins - or even at the same time when that sand bar is narrow enough.
