We liked staying in the Old Town of Rhodes. We rented a car and drive to couple of beaches. Island is small and you are always close to anything of you have a car.
See my VT pages for tips - we went there last summer

hi
rhodes depends on what you are looking for
if you do not want to hire a car then rhodes town will be the best place to stay as you can access most of the island on the public bus services and there is the most nightlife here - other than faliraki - a lot of beaches around rhodes are shingle at beat and rocky at worst -but you can find the odd nicer ones for sun-bathing on - or hire a sunbed

i love kolymbia as it is very small and not overly populated by tourists - we have stayed in Kolymbia Sun and Marianna Palace there which were both nice places - with their own swimming pools and not much else by the way of entertainment -

we have stayed in Petit Palais( chevaliers palace) and La Vita ( both owned by Mitsis Hotel cahin) while in Rhodes town - both lovely places but La Vita residents had to use the facilities at the Grand Hotel - which wasn't a problem

if you want loads of watersports during your stay you may be better off stayign at or near prassonnisi(sp) as the conditions down there suit windsurfing etc best although for scuba diving you probably will need to leave from rhodes harbour - but the companies pick up from around the island if you book to go with them ( waterhoppers and dive-med are the two biggest ones- if i remeber rightly)

then of course is the history part of the island - we love the "Old Town" and spend hours in there every time we visit - the ruins at Kamiros is a good place for a few hours

ther's absolutely loads to do

Just check out a few rhodes pages on here and a general search on google

have fun

Travel Tips for Rhodes (Island)

Going to the bathroom/john/loo/wc/toilet.

by Englischer

Any of the above that involve sitting down and doing your business may cause you to wonder what the bin nearby is for? Answer to place your used toilet paper in! Greek plumbing uses much smaller bore pipes than most of the western world, so if you flush your paper and block the works up you will not be popular. I find this practice unpleasant but this is the way so please comply- but do not forget to wash those hands afterwards!!!! Having a lazy 2 hour lunch at Mama Sofia's was my most enjoyable experience, but what I miss the most is the dusty air (thank heavens).

The beach

by Christianne

The beach of the city of Rodos is quite good but windy in some parts.
The best beach which is not windy is the part in front of the Mediterranean hotel in which we stayed during our last visit to the island.

Entering a Greek Church or Monastery

by Balam

If you want to see a Greek church or monastery inside, you must be properly dressed. It's considered rude to enter a church if your shoulders and knees aren't covered. This rule goes for both men and women. So if you as a tourist wants to be polite against the country you're visiting, have this in mind.

Shopping in Turkey

by beccyandjohn

If you like shopping then make sure you go to Turkey you can get just about anything and its cheap but make sure you barter with them.

I got all sorts of designer fakes, not that anyone would know, you could get all the Chav stuff if thats what your into. But they also had some realy nice designer stuff like Miss Sixty, Diesel, D&G etc. and there are some amazing bags i treated myself to a nice D&G bag, a few pairs of jeans a skirt some new shoes and a watch and of course theres plenty for the lads.

At the end of our shopping we all met up in a carpet shop, and before heading back where shown lots of rugs and stuff and recieved a cold drink.

Train

by Christianne

The tourist train starts from the Town Hall of Rodos every one hour (from 10.30-13.30 and from 18.00 to 21.00).
It goes around the Old Town Walls, goes up to the Acropolis of Rodos, Monte Smith and on coming back passes by the Kyprou Square, Psaropoula and the Aquarium. It is about 45 min itinerary.
