How long?

by Maurizioago

How many days would you recommend to stay on the island for a proper visit? One week? Maybe more?

Re: How long?

by doodybee

Hi
It all depends on how hectic you want your visit to be
you could actually spend a couple of days in the old town itself and still not see everything there is in there

If you are driving this would make things easy but there is public transport around the island ( it just takes some planning - and is more available in high season )

i could quite happily live there
hope you enjoy
Julie

How long?

Unfortunately or fortunately, Rhodes o Rodi per gli Italiani, is a big island and you need a lot of time to "discover" the island! Last September, I was there again for a week and in the end I realized that I hardly visited "the essential sites"!
You should count at least 3 days for the Old City of Rhodes: 4 museums, the Palace of the Grand Master, some churches, some old houses, the Synagogue and too many coat-of-arms.
Lindos is a must, you should spend at least a whole day!
Beaches, beaches, beaches, so many beaches!
Filerimos is another must!
Kallithea and its "Thermae", another must!

As you are an Italian, you should spend a lot of time to discover "the Italian Heritage" of Rhodes.A lot of wonderful buildings, churches, houses and many more in Italian colonial style, is something of the architectural heritage left by the Italian Occupation!

If you have any specific question, just ask me!

Efkaristo Costantino!

Re: How long?

by cgf

you would be surprise how many [old] people speak italian there. a scooter or a car is a must in Rhodos, Í've been there three times, a week each one, and I did not visit all yet, sure I'll go there again. I never did it for Rhodos, but I think the best and cheapest way to go there is a last-minute, maybe flight only and both those are weekly, better stay a week and go back again, after first time I did already know where to go, what to do...

Re: How long?

I don't want to talk Italian in Greece! I'm going to talk Greek there. I think I've learned around 20 words in Greek. I visited Greece several times.

Travel Tips for Rhodes (Island)

tower

by MATIM

Rhodes.

The clock tower was built on the ruins of a Byzantine tower wich was connected with the Palace of the Grand Masters. From evidence they know that in the beginning the tower was part of the Byzantine walls and was first built at the end of the 7th century. In 1856 it was virtually destroyed by the explosion from the nearby church of St. John of the knights. In the same year work began on the restoration by Fehti Pasha. He was the one who gave it the final character with its Baroque features, and he dedicated it in the memory of his father.
Nowadays you have the opportunity to do your shopping and enjoy a coffee or refreshing drink in the relaxed atmosphere of Roloi’s recently restored environment.
The mechanism of the clock is 150 years old.

New Market (Nea Agora)

by Christianne

A shopping area different the shopping area of the old town. Even the shops working hours are different. The shops in the old town close late in the night. The shops in Nea Agora close around 20.00 or 20.30.This is one of the shopping areas for the locals.
An old habit was for the tourists to buy here an umbrella.

Surfing

by himalia11

The beach at Prassonissi in the south of Rhodes seems to be a good place for surfers. It's windy there and you can choose between the wavy Agean Sea or the calm Mediteranean Sea. We've seen lots of surfers at the Mediteranean, and there also were some kite-surfers on the Agean Sea.

Kritinia Castle

by sandysmith

Between Siana and kamiros are the ruins of another castle - Kritinia, overlooking olive groves and pine woods with far reaching views over the coast. Yet another stronghold for the Knights of St John. Lying in ruins know so pick your way up carefully up th rubble-strewn staircase, rises over several levels but well worth it for the views over the coastline here - please see all the pics!

Motorbikes

by gale.blog.pl

You can rent a motorbike even in the smallest villages of Rhodes. They are inexpensive and easy to drive. You however need to check throughly the technical condition of what you're about to rent - all of them look nice and shiny bue not all of them are perfect.

Remember to wear a helmet while driving a motorbike. You may not look stunning in a bucket on your head but safety is more important than your hair style :-)
