Renewing visa

by olivegroves

I am coming over from marmaris in turkey to rhodes greece so i can renew my turkish visa on the way back again can i do it on a return day trip or will i have to spend a day or two in rhodes if so is there a cheap pension or hostel there?

Re: Renewing visa

by doodybee

hi
i don't know if you need to stay out of turkey fo ra couple of days but if you do i doubt very much anything on rhodes will be cheap at this time of year but if you have to stay try Mango Rooms in the old town or in kolymbia go to Heaven Bar and if it is stil owned by a guy called Manos - he has stdios there which are not too expensive

hope you sort something out
Julie

Re: Renewing visa

by Lyndra

I have never had to do this but it is my understanding that you do not have to stay overnight in Rhodes, you just need to leave Turkey. This will be done by taking the day trip, on your return you queue up and purchase your visa with all the other tourists who will be entering Turkey.
I hope this is OK advice and will save you an expensive overnight stay in Rhodes. Plenty of Turkish people will be able to give on theground advice if mine is incorrect.

Re: Renewing visa

if i leave on the last day of my 90 day visa. and return same day i may not get another visa because the other still has time on it before it expires.this is a dilema and if i leave the day after it expires i may be fined for over staying. so it looks like a overnight stay on rhodes

Re: Renewing visa

I think if you go and return on the last day of your visa you will be given a new one to prevent an illegal overstay.

I will be entering Turkey myself in July with a current visa but it will have expired before I leave in September so I will be asking for a new visa on my July entry to avoid the fine and the same problem you are experiencing.

Stifado, My favorite

by Balam

A Stifado is a meaty stew with beef and baby shallot onions. The best part is the thick sauce which is made slightly sweet by the onions.
serves 4-6)

You will need

1Kg lean beef - cubed.
500g baby shallot onions - peeled.
1 large onions chopped.
1 large juicy tomatoes - chopped.
2 table-spoons of tomato paste.
1/2 nutmeg crushed (put it into a bag and hit it with a rolling pin!)
1 cinnamon stick and 3 cloves.
4 garlic cloves - finely chopped.
1 vegetable stock cube (optional)
Rosemary sprig or two.
1 small wineglass of extra-virgin olive oil.
1 glass of red or white wine.
2 table-spoons of vinegar.
Fresh coarsely ground black pepper and salt.

1. Add the beef to large frying pan or casserole dish. Place on a high heat, stirring occasionally until meat is sealed.

2. Add the olive oil, chopped onions and garlic. Continue cooking on a high heat, until the onions have turned soft. (About 5mins)

3. Add wine and vinegar, leave on heat but covered for another 5 mins.

4. Next nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, rosemary, stock cube and a good pinch of black pepper. Keep stirring while the ingredients blend, on a moderate heat. Add salt to taste.

5. Keep heating while adding the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste.

6. Turn out into a casserole dish (Terracota), with lid. Add 1 litre of hot water so as to cover the meat. Cook in oven until the meat is nearly cooked - about one hour.

7. While waiting, peel the baby shallot onions, wash them and shallow fry them in a little olive oil, until soft, not letting them burn.

8. Add the shallots (but not the oil) to the simmering meat and leave in the oven until the meat is thoroughly cooked (soft and tender) - at least another hour - add water if needed (don't let it dry out), so that you end up with a rich thick sauce.

Organic wine and olive oil

by jayhawk2000

It's hard to describe anything on the main road to Butterfly Valley as being 'off the beaten track' but the small Anastasia Triantafillou winery nearby was quiet when we visited. We were given personal attention and invited to sample about seven of their wines, both red and white, from dry to sweet. We walked out with six bottles, so the sales tactics worked!

They use several local grape varieties you will be unfamiliar with which produce surprising flavours. You'd swear their dry white oaked Thalassinos wine made from the Athiri grape was a red wine, it may be an acquired taste for some but not an expensive experiment for 6 euros a bottle. Their Cabernet Sauvignon is nice and dry, a bit pricier at 7 euros a bottle but go on, treat yourself. They also do sweet whites which verge on being a dessert wine, ask for a taste and see what you think. And it's all made organically, so it must be good for you, *glug glug*.

Right across the road is the Natura Rodos shop selling more local wine plus liquers, soaps, herbs, honey and other treats. You're free to sample the liquers (the coffee and anise seed one was nice) plus there's a vat of organic oil olive fresh from the shopkeeper's grove which at 5 euro a litre was an absolute steal. We had ours with bread and salad at every meal we prepared for the rest of the trip and still had plenty to cart home.

The shops are on the main road leading north out of Butterfly Valley on your way to Theologos on the west coast. If you're coming from the east coast, turn at Afandou and head inland past Psinthos, following signs for the butterflies.

Hotel Balcony

by Maggies about Depends on your hotel ;-)

Having Rhodes bars as an option, we figured out we would come better off having our own party on the hotel balcony.
So, the option was walking down the bar street (in Rhodes City or Faliraki), being bugged by teenagers trying to make us enter one of the bars, in the worst case - entering one, drinking beer or some cocktail - 5 Eur each and watching the teenagers getting dead drunk. Plus, I had the worst Strawberry Margharita in my life in Rhodes City.
If you decide to stay in your hotel balcony, you can make your own cocktails, play stupid games, dance, put your feet on the table and just enjoy the relaxed party. No dress code but mosquito repellent might be usefull!

HYDROFOIL TO RHODES

by whitecliff62

The inside of the hydrofoil is quite plush really and not what i would have expected, its seating arrangements remind me more of a large plane than a boat. There is a bar at the back where you can buy drinks and snacks, there is an upper deck but on this trip it was closed due to rough seas
