One-Day Tour of Rhodes Island in Greece

by freddie18

My stay in Rhodes with my wife and daughter in October is too short that we have only one day to tour the Old Town. Anyone have any suggestion on how we can maximize this one day sightseeing? I am thinking of a driver with a car and can take us anywhere we want to from morning till late in the afternoon to get ready to go to the Diagoras Airport bound for Cyprus. Your advice will be appreciated.

We also had one day to visit Rhodes as we were in a cruise. We visited all the city. The distances are not too large and you will probably enter in the palaces, museums, churches etc. Do not miss the old town with the palace of the Grand Master (two museums inside), the city walls and gates, Mandraki port, Knights street, the Clock tower... Check "things to do" tips in Rhodes pages.
Only for the Acropolis you might need a transport (though we went and came back walking), but you can take a taxi just for this purpose.

I agree, you don't need a car. Walk around in the old city and enjoy the views at the mandraki old port.

Travel Tips for Rhodes (Island)

Unspoilt Harkai

by sandysmith

Haraki was such an idlyllic place to unwind - I'm also reluctant to mention it much in case it becomes too popular! Its still relatively undeveloped and apartment and hotel backing the promenade of the curving bay are not high rise and the shady trees and flowers added to its picturesque setting. As you can see from the pic the usual sunbeds and parasols can be hired.

Umbrellas

by dusandz

Seeing many shops that sell umbrellas (only) can be very surprising, especially on the island at the border between Mediterranean and Aegean sea. Story says, that if you buy an umbrella on Rhodes, you'll come there again. Yup, stupid. Nonetheless, I bought one.

Lose yourself in the real Rhodes

by vicground

Rhodes Old Town is a definite must do on any tourists itinerary. Its a beautiful place to see both during the daytime and evening. In the evenings the old walls are lit up and a stroll around the moat is a must.

However if you go away from the center of the old town and stray up any of the multitude of little cobbled alleyways you enter the real old town. Here locals sit only feet opposite eachother outside their homes in the narrow alleys. They simply pass away the hours chatting and chilling whilst their open aired ovens cook their evening meals.

These folk seem to be oblivious to the rat race we seem to live in and they seem to exist in a culture that is still a hell of a lot slower and more relaxed than ours.

It is easy to become disorientated within this labrynth of alleyways but in reality you are never far from the more tourist trodden areas. It is a real eye opener just to experience this real Rhodes.

Clothes and Leatherware

by Balam

When your in Greece you will probably go out on a 'Greek night' see the dancers wearing traditional costumes or if your really lucky while your out adventuring in the mounains you might just come across a sheperd wearing traditional clothes, things like this make great memories and photo's but when your shopping for things to take back home remember that the Folk look looks much better on Greek folk. At best, take home a fishermans sweater, a pair of sandles or homemade boots (especialy from Archangelos on Rhodes).
As far as Leather goods go, like anywhere you get what you pay for and some of the mediocre workmanship on leather luggage does not justify the vast displays it commands at every resort in Greece. If you want Quality leather coats and bags look out for the exclusive shops and expect to pay some considerable sums for it.

Rent a car

by cjg1

I am strongly suggesting you rent a car and see the island. It is a fantastic place with so much to see for a day trip or two away from the beaches and party.

Although I am telling you to drive on this island find someplace to stay for the night/day before the party.
