Stavros. Bar
by jules88
The Walls, Walk round them. In the day. Go for a walk round the walls, Take plenty of water. When you have finished, Go for a beer in the quiet bar of Stavros. (try to enter the walls at the Athanasiou gate). Go towards the mosque, and the bar is on IPODAMOU St. Nice and cool, the guy Stavros is a bit of a comic, and when we were there he was getting apricots from his tree outside ,and giving us them on the bar. We went back 2 years later, Having only been in once before and he greeted us like old friends the minute we walked in!
The bar is only small and the walls are covered in memorabilia... Its a friendly place for a quiet beer in what is essentially a british bar with a friendly Greek family feel.
When I`m on holiday i like to do all the greek things, but half an hour in here just gives me a feeling of my local back home.. cant explain it, but its nice..
Want to see a snake on the road?

When you want to go from eastern shore to western one, you'd think of crossing the island from the middle... Well... easy if there would by paved or surfaced road. This was not the case, so we ended up in gravel dirt roads, among tens of vipers in the middle of Rhodes.

There are some really great places around the island away from Rhodes town. There's great beaches, superb places for swimming & snorkelling, fantastic historical sights and some delightful little villages. I'll cover these kind of places more on the Rhodes Island page when I do it.
The Palace of the Grand Master.
by Maurizioago
This was the residence of the Grand Master and the place where the order gathered.
It was first built by the Knights of Saint John on the site of a 7th century Byzantine fortress. The Turkish that occupied the island between 1522 and 1912 converted it into a prison and later left the palace to ruins. In 1865 it was almost destroyed by the explosion of a powder deposit. In the 30's the Italians rebuilt the palace using old drawings to create a holiday residence for king Victor Emanuel III and for Mussolini.
The palace is really huge. Inside you can see many mosaics taken from the island of Kos; furniture and lots of nice statues of angels-chandeliers. Moreover there is an area with archaeological finds. Another room of the palace has a collection of icons.
There is not a cafe or a restaurant inside the palace. There is only a souvenir shop and the toilets.
Nea Agora

From the windmills look across to the new town and notice the long white building with a centrtal doorway. This is the new market-place and its ouside area facing the harbour is arrayed with tempting cafes and coffee bars. Indeed its a dilemma as if you walk on the harbour side you get asked about taking a boat trip and if you cross over to avoid them them you have to pass all those cakes....well we often succumbed!
