The Mandraki harbour.
by Maurizioago
This was the port of ancient Rhodos. Its entrance could be closed with chains. Time ago at its entrance there were a deer and a hind. Today you can see only the deer. What happened to the hind I really don't know.
The Mandraki is where you can see lots of fishing and daytrips boats. In fact you can book a cruise to Symi Island or to Marmaris (Turkey) here.
The Turkish Fountain in the Hippokrates Square
by Fam.Rauca
In the middle of the Hippocrates Square there is the beautiful Turkish Fountain, an interesting piece of the place.
Around the fountain come a lot of pigeons that become to eat from the tourists, and drink water from the well.
This is a middle point of the square and a meet point for the visitors.
Monte Smith - Ancient Theatre
by steventilly
This ancient theatre is also on Monte Smith. It dates from about the 2nd century BC, though only 3 of the steps are actually original, the rest being "restored" by the Italians again. The three original steps are the different coloured ones, one of which Susan is sitting on.
Apparently the theatre is used for summer performances, though we saw nothing of this.
Street of the Knights
by Myfanwe
The Street of the Knights (Ippoton Street) runs next to the Archaelogical Museum and follows the ancient road which led from the harbour to the Temple of Heios where the Knights built the Palace of the Grand Masters. As you walk up the street you will find on the right hand side, the Inn of Italy which was built by Fabrizio del Caretto in 1519, the 15th Century Inn of France, Italy, Spain, Zizim House, a French Chapel and the Inn of Provence. The Inn of Spain can be found on the right hand side of the street. These buildings now house various institutes and galleries. I had a peek into the doorway of some where the doors were open & was rewarded by the sight of some great architecture and courtyard gardens for my nosiness!!
The Freedom Gate - Pili Elefterias
by Fam.Rauca
The gate was built by the Italians in the year 1924.
It makes possible the entrance from the New City, direct into the Symi Square.
This gate is a modern, large construction that permits the entrance of the cars into the inside of the walls.
