Travel Tips for Rodos (City)

Getting Married

by steventilly

Not so much a "local custom" as a "British custom" - there seems to be quite a trend for getting married on Rhodes. While we were there we saw at least 6 British weddings, so probably in the time we were there there were literally dozens. The photographs etc all took place outside the Church Of The Assumption by Mandraki Harbour, but the weddings all seemed to take place in the city hall rather than the church.
It's apparently popular for British people to go to St Paul's church at Lindos to get married too, though we never saw any examples of that.

Ruined Mosques

by sandysmith

This was the mosque of Retjep Pasha which was built in 1588 using material from several churches. In its day it was the most beautiful mosque in Rhodes and itsso sad to see it in this forlon neglected state now. Found in Platia Doreos - a lovely quiet square in the so-called Turkish quarter of the old town. Some nice litle cafes here too

Cosy Old Town Cafe

by sandysmith about Mon Cafe

There are several cafes such as Mon Cafe in the quiet streets off touristic Sokratous. Great place to enjoy a cool drink or coffee on the shady outside seated area which is decorated with these colourful rugs and cushions to sit on. Frappes!

The Castle Moat

by Fam.Rauca

The walls around the castle of Grand Master were made as a double fortification, with the objective to defend the edifice.

Between the two sides of the wall, one should put water, as an additional protect for the castle.
That happened newer, but this sector of the construction is at the present a green side of the region, an additional garden of the palace.

Plane trees and bushes with colourfully flowers are there between the walls in this castle moat.

Many stone balls there are still on the place.

Inns Of The Knights

by steventilly

These buildings now have various uses - most are used by historical & cultural departments of the Rhodes government, and some are use as consulates by foreign states - which is I think an appropriate use, given their history. All are beautiful.
This view down the street has the Italian Consulate in the foreground (with the flags).
