It is possible to go swimming in Rhodes town there are beaches either side of the tip of the town. They are not the best on the island of Rhodes but are adequate and sunbeds and parasols can be hired for the day.
This is Elli beach near the Casino in Rhodes.
On the outskirts of Rhodes Town is Monte Smith - well being named Smith I guess we had to visit this. The hilltop here was the former religious and ceremonial centre for Rhodes in the 5th century B.C.
It can be reached by the number 5 local bus from the Nea Agora and the tourist train comes up here but its a pleasant walk through a residential area - less than 2 miles and the road gradually climbs the hill to reach the site of the old acropolis of Rhodes.
This is a very agreeable restaurant placed under the cupolas of the Neá Agora, in the centre of Rhodes City.
The restaurant offers to the guests a large number of traditional or international foods and drinks.
The many tourists that come here, in the city every year, visit this restaurant and enjoy the comfortable atmosphere on the terrace.
The food is exquisite and the personnel are friendly and hospitable.
This is the Sokrates Street, one of the main shopping streets in the Old Town. In lots of old buildings in the town, you'll find restaurants, cafes and shops where you can buy fur, sponges, spices, juwels, icons and all kind of "tourist stuff". I was a bit disturbed by this much shops, but you can also find more "original" parts in the old town if you walk around a bit. You'll discover more and more interesting places, the Old Town is full of corners! The red building with the dome in the background is the Suleiman mosque.
Strewn along the moat walk are numerous cannon balls. Take it from Dave they are heavy but just look where this one landed !
The bight red poppies we saw in May here really added to the colour - we managed to walk well ahead of the gardener who was mowing the grass and the poppies the day we did this walk :-S
