Good Value Apartments

We stayed at the Opera House apartments, situated handily towards the back of the harboutr of Yilaos not far from the local church and school. They were recommended to us by VT friend Steventilly and we were not disappointed.

Unique Quality: Good sized rooms, bedroom in need of some minor decoration to the walls - see pics in travelogue below. The owners were so friendly and helpful. Lovely courtyard garden/bar area where breakfast was taken - plus a new sun terrace was being finished off for the main season just below our apartments.
Very reasonable price at 50 euros per night for a double room - plus the sitting/kitchenette area also had 2 further single beds. Good considering Greece is more basic than other european resorts

Friendly Family Place

A hotel with a difference, this is actually a number of individual houses, built in traditional Symi style, clustered around a garden. It's set about 5 minutes walks from the harbour and is so very quiet and peaceful, and yet so conveniently situated.
The Opera House is owned and run by a Symiot family who spent a number of years in Australia - hence the name of the hotel. They're all very friendly and helpful and make your stay so very enjoyable. If I returned to Symi (and I intend to some day) I don't think I'd stay anywhere other than this place, it was so lovely.
As well as the hotel some of the houses are actually let out as self catering apartments (these have a small kitchen, of course). The difference in price between this and the "hotel" is minimal and it better suited us to take the hotel option, because we wanted to try out the local tavernas rather than cook for ourself.
The cost of our room, in October 2003, was 50 euro per night, including breakfast. To us, this was a complete bargain for the quality of the accomodation and service.

Unique Quality: Each house serves as basically two hotel rooms, one downstairs and one up. Of course, as you're getting half a house you're getting more than just a bedroom. Our room consisted of two bedrooms, both of which were very spacious, well decorated and imaculately clean, one of them containing a a little table and a fridge and having a "sofa bed" which allowed it to be used more like a living room. There is also (of course) a bathroom with shower & wc.
The upstairs rooms have a balcony on which you can sit, the downstairs ones have a table & chairs on the small terrace, though you can of course sit in the garden, which is where breakfast is served and where you can get bar drinks at almost any time of day or evening.
