cost of living

by newtonmj

We are about to go to Skiathos. I haven't been abraod for 6 years and have never used euros - I'm out of touch with costs! I am a single adult taking two teenage children. What does it cost per day for three/four people self catering in terns of food etc.? Thanks

Hello there,

your homepage does not suggest where you are from, so it is difficult to answer comaprative to where you live.

I have been visiting greece for over 20 years now, although I have never been to Skiathos. What I would suggest is that, since joining the Federal States of E, also known as the EU, and more specifically the Euro, Greece has become considerably more expensive. It is no longer the inexpensive option it was in the 80's.

As a general rule of thumb, you should think in terms of any other Southern European country, Italy for example.

Hope this assists,

Many thanks for your reply - we are from Hertfordshire. Would it be fair to say that cost wise it is like home from home? (assuming you are from the UK!)

Re: cost of living

Very broadly speaking about the same as the UK, if you buy Greek brands. Eating out is again UK Pub Grub prices though wine is somewhat cheaper unless you buy the fancy bottled stuff.

I agree with ouzone. Think UK prices for food in supermarkets, apart from the local spirits, wine and cigarettes which will be cheaper.

Eating out is, as stated, about pub grub prices. Drinks and coffees etc. can be expensive, better to have one at home before you go out!

Sun, sun and more sun

Visit the dog shelter. It is an hours walk from the bus stop at Troulos, 3.5 kilometer on a switchback road. Can get a taxi but please make sure they understand that you require a pick up later. We managed to get stranded, by our taxi driver.

This has been going for 12 plus years. We visited on our previous trip to the island 6 years ago. Then we walked a dog called Fraggle, and spoke to Helen (who runs the dog's home) and she had photo's of Fraggle who had been re-homed in Switzerland. Helen has photo's of all her re-homed dogs. This trip we walked Wilma, a cocker spaniel who was pregnant and whilst on the island for our 2 weeks she gave birth to 3 healthy puppies. I would just like to add that Edwina Currie has one of these dogs. Earing at Kalyves taverna. We had eaten there 6 years ago, and it has not changed. We had wonderful food, great company and we reccommended it to any one that asked.

We met a couple that were staying in Skiathos town, but had travelled to Troulos for the evening. They asked where they could eat the had "The Greek Feel" to it. Gave them directions etc. Two night's later we were back in the taverna and they were there. They had eaten every night in the taverna and travelled fro Skiathos Town each night, they loved it and thanked us for the reccommendation. What more can we say.

Kastro ruins

by centrope

Skiathos is not an ideal place for those searching for history. The island has been set apart from the main events during the antics, medieval time as well as the greek national movement in the 19the century. But there are some interesting points and places. Kastro ruins, medieval settlement that was abandoned in the early years of 19th century is probably the most prominent place. This settlement would not be considered as one of the immense historical values in Greece, but offers at least some touch of the past, as well as marvelous views toward the sea and mainland.

Weather in Skiathos Island

by dimilag

The island is rather cold in the winter, but it has a pleasant climate during the summer. The usual daytime air temperature is over 30 °C usually in July and August, but night temperature is lower. The water is warm during from July to September, but colder in the beginning of the season. You will not experience any rain phenomenon in Skiathos, since rain is very rare during the summer months, note that there is on average only one raining day in June and September and none in July and August.

Banks - ATMs

by dimilag

Skiathos has branches of most Greek banks which work in cooperation with the most important foreign and international banks and you will find a wide display of ATM’s spread all over the centre town area at your disposal.
