White House Hotel: Herm's Very Own White House

The White House Hotel is a glorious building overlooking the main Harbour on the Island. It consists of rooms within the Hotel main building and rooms in a small number of cottages within Harbour Village.

We stayed in a ground floor, sea view room in one of the cottages.

The quality of everything at the Hotel is high. The rooms are well appointed, the food is good (with a long wine list) and an extensive breakfast is served. The staff are extremely helpful and the Hotel provides a bit of luxury that complements the feeling of being a little removed from the hustle and bustle of daily life by being on the Island.

The gardens and landscaping are lovely and the swimming pool looks inviting (although not used by me), and there is a steep walk (Princess Radziwill's Walk) that takes you to the top of the hill behind the hotel. This is reserved for hotel guests and the climb is rewarded by spectacular views of the Harbour and out to Jethou and Guernsey.

Overall, a charming place to stay. If I had one small area for improvement, it would be that the restaurant and communal areas in the hotel could do with being cosier and a little less brightly lit.

The hotel provides good value package deals and will arrange all flights and transfers on your behalf. The packages include everything you need for an enjoyable stay on the Island - flights from the UK to Guernsey, taxis to and from Guernsey Airport to the Harbour in St Peter Port, return Travel Trident ferry crossing, breakfast and four course evening meal. With such a substantial breakfast provided, a light lunch will suffice to fuel walks and swims around the Island, so the Hotel really provides everything you need.

The location of the Hotel on Herm Island is it's main attraction. High quality food in the restaurant is also a draw, and it seems that a night on Herm including a stay and dinner in the White House is a popular treat form Guernsey people.

It's easy to see why.
