Youth Hostels in general are great for the budget traveller. Most cities have them, and membership in Hostelling International will give you a guidbook to all the hostels in the world. You probably won't have your own room, but the benefits are great.
Hostels are very inexpensive, usually the least expensive in the area, which means you can stay in desirable locations without breaking the bank.
Youth hostels are dorm-style accomodations, meaning you share a room with other people, I found that most rooms have about 4 beds. Most hostels will have a self-serve kitchen, cafeteria, or both, which makes for cheap eats and opportunities to meet fellow travellers. A great location, a lot of the tourist sights are actaully within walking distance from here! There is a kitchen right off the lounge, and everyone seems to gather here, more so than at other hostels I have stayed at. I remember arriving in Salzburg after a two day train ride from Athens. We walked down a side street and found a Gasthaus (can't remember the name). I will never forget the beds. The feather covers were at least 1 meter thick! Double pillows half a meter thick each. As I woke up the next morning I thought I was floating in a cloud! I would suggest that because Europe is such a large area to cover that you use the hotel guides that Virtualtourist has to offer. There are more than enough Hotels and other accomadation to keep anyone happy. Theme: Other

There are many beautiful (and expensives) hotels, but i think bed and breakfast is good for all people.
There are campings too. Pay attention at this lodging type : it's possible isn't good place. Look around before stop you. Theme: Campground

For all traveling women out there, I heartily recommend the Suore Cansionado (sp?)convent on Giudecca Island when in Venice (sorry guys, but no men allowed).
The accomodations are admittedly spartan (you'll stay in a large room with MANY other traveling women) but the nuns (non-English speaking) are delightful. Theme: OtherComparison: least expensiveAddress: Giudecca Island, Venice

Having only stayed at one hotel in Athens, I can only recommend The Phillipos Hotel.
Boutique style, only 10 minutes walk from the Acropolis, with a view of the Parthenon from the top floor of the hotel. Theme: HotelComparison: about average
