Rent a private room all over the world

by desert_princess

A great idea indeed - rent your spare room to others or find a room for yourself.

GERMANY: Hotel Stern: a cheap, modern hotel with a special past

by globetrott

Hotel Stern is the cheapest hotel you will find in the area of the famous / notorious Reeperbahn, in the very heart of Hamburg and it is a good, modern hotel now.
By the small rooms they have you may understand that this place was once used for another purpose, before it was transfered into a nice hotel. When you see the rather low prices of this place, you should considder that breakfast is seperate ( 6,00 euros per person extra)
My nephew stayed there some weeks ago and enjoyed it !

I would not recommend this place for families with children or other sensitive persons, because this place is surrounded by strange bars and shops.
At the same time it makes a lot of sense for other people to live not far from the discos, nightlife and theaters of Hamburg. Decide for yourself !!
48 euros per doubleroom, that is even a good deal for Hamburg, when you are travelling alone !
They even have their own garage !

GERMANY: Cap San Diego: some hotelrooms on a ship in Hamburg`s port

by globetrott

The cap San Diego is a traditional cargo-ship, anchored permanentely in the port of Hamburg and it is a museum-ship that also has a few of the former officers cabins to rent for tourists. So you reside actually in the very best part of the port of Hamburg in a very special place.

There is NO breakfast available onboard and the rooms are certainly also less romantic than e.g. onboard of the "Feuerschiff".
On the other hand there are mostly NO parties and restaurant-activities going on onboard after the last visitors had left the museum-ship in the late afternoon.
You will also have a lot of space out on deck including a swimming-pool, BUT I am not sure if that could be used in summer !

There are several cabins available :
The captains cabin consists of a sleeping-room and a living-room plus a seperate bathroom with bath-tub and toilette:
it is 100 euros for double-use , including a seperate bed for the 2nd person. Breakfast is never included, but in the captains cabin you find find a jug of coffee and some snacks.
ordinary cabins are 95 euros for the double-cabin
and 76 euros for the single cabins
both are without breakfast !

GERMANY: Jugendherberge Auf dem Stintfang: a hostel with an excellent view in Hamburg

by globetrott

There are in fact just a few hotels with such a great view of Hamburgs port and all the others are extremely expensive. Take a look at my photo here, it was taken from the terrace of this youth-hostel.
Jugendherberge Auf dem Stintfang is just a few steps to walk from St. Pauli and Reeperbahn and it has certainly one of the best views of all hostels and even most of the hotels in Hamburg : My main picture was taken from their terrace, facing Landungsbruecken. When arriving at Hauptbahnhof, you simply take U3, S1 or S3 to St.Pauli Landungsbruecken, get out of the station, walk up lots of steps and you are in the hostel.

Prices are moderate and depend also upon your age :
tourists older than 27 years pay 3 euros more than young people.
All prices include breakfast and linen :
Doublerooms : 23,30 (26,30) euros per Person
3&4-bed-rooms : 21,80 (24,80) euros per person
5&6-bed-rooms : 18,80 (21,80 ) euros per person
8-bed-rooms : 17,30 (20,30) euros per person

GERMANY: Hotel Gotisches Haus: a romantic hotel in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

by globetrott

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is such a lovely and interesting place to visit, that it should be on the plan for every visit in Germany.
Hotel Gotisches Haus (gothic house) is a nice hotel in the very centre of Rothenburg, just about 200 meters from the town-square and just a few steps from the Christmas-world of Kaethe Wohlfahrt.

Click on my pictures and you will see the great entrance-hall of that hotel, and maybe you take a 2nd look at this unique chandelier, with plenty of houses of the old city of Rothenburg, and all of them will be lighted in the evening.
Next to the reception they have a house-bar, made like a library, and the excellent restaurant is next to it with great old furniture - see more about it under my restaurant-tips !
All rooms have private facilities, telephone & cable-TV and the house, that dates back to the 13th centrury also has a lift.

CYPRUS: Akteon Holiday Village in Paphos: my favorite Hotel in Cyprus

by globetrott

I had stayed in 3 different hotels, while travelling in Cyprus and this was my very best :
I had 2 nights in this hotel and it was a big difference from the room that I had in the Larco-hotel in Larnaca. In the Akteon everything was perfectely clean and when looking at the tiles in the bathroom etc. it was like you know it from lots of perfect hotels in Europeand elsewhere, BUT the price here was also double: I payed 42 euros per night at the end of October for the single-use of this big appartment that had a full kitchen, fridge, microwave and cutlery, pans and pots etc. for a family of 4 or even more.
This price of 42 euros was "self-catering" and in addition I was given the chance to book upon arrival for halfboard for 16 euros extra, while the dinner-buffet alone was 15 euros and breakfast-buffet was 7,50 euros, so these 16 euros are a good offer.
Another offer was "all inclusive" for 30 euros a day.
The Lunch-buffet is 11,50 euros, but during the day I was sightseeing, so only the Halfboard made sense for me.
The breakfast- and the dinner-buffet were excellent with a great choice of starters and soups, main courses, salads and deserts and both days the choice was different. They seem to have changing themes each dinner like italian, spanish dishes etc.

They have a large outdoor-swimmingpool and also some smaller pool inside and a family would find lots of facilities there in order to spend the day. They also have their own supermarket.

GERMANY: Hotel Rheinfels in St.Goar: a great castle-hotel above the river Rhine

by globetrott

This hotel is in St. Goar, not far away from the famous Loreley-rock in the Rhine-valley. Burg Rheinfels dates back to the year 1245 and it is partly a ruin today and a modern ****hotel was added close to castle-museum. They have a great restaurant and terrace with a perfect view of the Rhine-valley.

The very best about this hotel is the perfect Rhine-view that you have from many of their rooms and from the hotel-terrace, and as you may see on one of my pictures, they even provide motor-scooters for their hotel-guests.

NO train-noises here at all!

Tip Photo
DANMARK: Den Gammel Arrest in RIBE: the old prison is a nice hotel now

by globetrott

How about staying in a hotel-room that had once been a prison-cell ? In Ribe / Danmark you can try it out !
This building dates back to 1546, it was first a school, later a prison and nowadays it is a great hotel ! This place is not really a cheap hotel, in fact it is quite expensive like most of the hotels in Danmark, but it is funny to sleep in the old prison-cells and wake up in the morning and be able to step out again after a great breakfast-buffet !

A great architect has changed the old prison-interio into a modern hotel-room, some with private bathroom, most of them with the facilities on the corridor, like in the real prison...

Tip Photo
GERMANY: ship-hotel "Feuerschiff": a ship-hotel in Hamburg

by globetrott

Feuerschiff might be an interesting alternative to staying in an ordinary hotel in Hamburg ! You will find this hotel- and restaurant-ship in the port of Hamburg, close to the Speicherstadt ! The nice lady at the reception showed me around a bit and I was able to take some pictures of the captains quaters , the best accomodation you may get onboard of the Feuerschiff.
Look at these pictures : all furniture is made of mahagony , 2 beds on top of each other, small bull-eyes facing the river Elbe and like every other cabin on Feuerschiff it includes also a small private bathroom and toilet.

The prices are moderate and include a great breakfast:
Captain's Cabin is 75 Euros as single
and 120 euros as double-cabin
Lightmen-Cabins : 65 for single, 100 euros as double room
They only have a total of 6 cabins and 10 beds
so you have to reserve well in advance !!

Feuerschiff is a place for all people enjoying the special atmosphere onboard of old ships. This includes also a bit of swinging with the waves, it is not much, but you may "feel" a bit when-ever one of the bigger ships is passing by. For real cruise-fans this is NO disadvantage at all, in the contrary, it is part of the pleasure.
