GERMANY: Schlosshotel Schönburg in Oberwesel: a perfect luxury castle-hotel !

by globetrott

This is certainly the very best castle-hotel that you will find in the Rhine-valley :
Schlosshotel Schönburg in Oberwesel is without doubt one of the very best and most exclusive castle-hotels along the river Rhine. This old and romantic castle dates back to the 10th century and nowadays the castle is used partly as a luxury hotel and as a "Kolpingheim / hostel" and another large hotel close to the castle, at the big car-park.

Schlosshotel Schönburg in Oberwesel is a luxury hotel and it has a great terrace with a perfect view of the Rhine-valley. You have to leave your car at the parking and your luggage will be taken with a small truck to the hotel. all of the great rooms are facing the river and also the restaurant is well known for its perfect cuisine...
Its no problem to take a look and walk around the castle, even when you are no hotel-guest.

NO noises of trains in this hotel !!!

GERMANY: Burg Stahleck in Bacharach: a hostel inside a Rhine-castle

by globetrott

Hostel Burg Stahleck in Bacharach might be the highlight for your stay in the Rhine- and Mosel-valley, in case that you are a budget-traveller and have to search for a cheap price of your accomodation. Burg Stahleck offers a perfect panorama-view over the Rhine-valley at moderate prices - see the link to their webpage !

You may enter the castle freely and without restriction as a tourist, even when you dont intend to stay in the hostel. As a hostel-guest you may even use the great table-tennis at one of the terraces - see my pictures : Tabletennis with a perfect view!
I also saw a laundry-room with plenty of machines, operated with coins.

Also in this hostel you will not hear any train-noises !

GERMANY: Hotel Burg Liebenstein: a great hotel in a Rhine-castle

by globetrott

When travelling along the river Rhine, why dont you try to stay in a castlehotel ?
Hotel Burg Liebenstein is an interesting hotel in Kamp-Bornhofen at the right bank of the river Rhine, and it offers a great panorama-view and lots of possibilities to hike.
The castle-hotel is quite remote and it offers a few great rooms at reasonable prices - just click on the link below !
I was there in early April, the week before easter and there were just a very few guests, as the street going up is quite steep and the crowds of tourists rather stay in the Rhine-valley.

They have a great interior with several old Iron armouries, an open fireplace and lovely furniture - see my pics of the restaurant.
Dont expect a lift in this hotel

You will NOT hear any train-noises in this hotel !

CZECH REPUBLIK: Libusin & Mamenka: a great Art Nouveau Hotel

by globetrott

Would really expect such a lovely hotel in Art Nouveau-style in the mountains of the Czech republik ?
Mamenka is the name of the Art Nouveau building that is used as a hotel today.
10 doubble rooms and 1 suite, all of them with private facilities , colour TV with satellite, fridge, minibar and telephone !

Room-prices are really moderate for such a location and lovely architecture:
around 50 euros per room, per night, was the price
And as a hotel-guest you are also entiteled to drive up the mountain with your car.

SWITZERLAND: Grandhotel Giessbach: an elegant Grandhotel & special surrounding

by globetrott

Are you looking for a quiet hotel with the flair of a traditional swiss Grand-Hotel ?
Grandhotel Giessbach close to Brienz is a very special place to spend a really quiet vacation far away from noisy cartrafic and it used to be one of the most elegant hotels of its time, when it was built in 1855 opposite of the village of Brienz, on top of a rock overlooking Brienzersee and next to a really scenic waterfall. The most glorious times for the hotel was between 1870 and 1914 but afterwards tourism changed a lot and it was hard to fill the rooms of such a remote hotel.
In 1985 it was restored and it looks really great again from inside !! In Grandhotel Giessbach you may still breath the good old times, that seem to have stood still for ages there... Click on my picture in order to see the great details of architecture - I also have a seperate page about Giessbach, the waterfalls, the cable-car, the hotel & surroundings!

Unique Qualities:

Grandhotel Giessbach is a bit off the beaten path, a place to relax, and it is very helpful to get there by your own car.
How to get to Giessbach :
1)on the road from Brienz - BUT it is quite narrow and might be dangerous at certain times, because only at a few places it is possible to pass by other cars, and it might be good to avoid the times, when the public bus goes to Axalp.
2)By ship - the elegant, traditional way, most of the tourists came that way in the good old times of the hotel. Each and every ship on Brienzersee stops there !!
In Interlaken the hotel has a special car-parking for their guests, just a few steps from the place where the ships will leave from !
The hotel is open only in summertime
and for a few festivities also around Christmas.

click here for a great movie about this hotel!

Hostelling International/Youth Hostel Association: staying in youth hostels around Europe

by angiebabe

hi I dont like camping unless Im definitely somewhere safe such as with friends in Morocco! but otherwise have been using a lot of hostels on my frequent travels around Europe - Ive used a book made by Hostelling INternational that has all the hostels country by country with prices, contact info, location maps, facilities provided etc and its published yearly and excellent to have when youre on the go and be able to plan or detour when youre on the go. - you would probably get a good idea from the HI website.

Italy's hostels are pretty cheap - I found them about12-15 euro a night, Portugal Ive enjoyed driving around and many hostels there only 7 euro a night!
France Ive paid as cheap as 11 euro a night 22 or 25 euro a night in Paris which by their standards is pretty cheap, Hollands hostels especially out in the country are a bargain and they seem to have a lot of camping grounds too - have a couple of tips in my various Holland pages, Switzerlands hostels are excellent and by far cheapest accomm available when otherwise accom in Switz can be pretty dear but compared with other european countries they can still be the upper level at say 20-25euro a night, Germany I stayed in quite a number of low priced hostels and even in Bavaria which I remember the hostels being pretty cheap, where they say you have to be under a certain age/be a teenager I was allowed to stay and often quite grey haired travellers staying amongst the various hostels there too.

EUROPA HOTEL (BELFAST): THE MOST BOMBED HOTEL IN EUROPE

by DAO

Thankfully today, the only thing that gets bombed in this hotel now are the guests in the bar. With 2 excellent bars, that’s easy to do. The Europa is THE hotel to stay in and be seen at. When Royalty and Diplomats come here, this is where they stay. In my case, my job was kind enough to let me stay. So what is the history? It was opened in July 1971 and was clearly THE luxury hotel in Belfast. The proletarian IRA saw this as just about everything they didn’t like and promptly started setting off bombs in, out and nearby the hotel. Over 30 times they forced redecorations. Fortunately that’s all they did.

Today it has been massively refurbished and redecorated, without any outside help, to a luxurious finish. The rooms are compact, but full of good things like supersoft beds, great monsoon showers and flat-screen TV’s. Yep, I have pictures of all that!

This 4-star hotel has 240 bedrooms, including the 56 Executive Suites. If you simply must work, you also get WiFi internet access.

Each room has:
International direct dial telephone
Room service available (7.00am - 2.00am)
Tea & coffee making facilities
Trouser presses or irons & ironing boards
Hair dryer
Laundry & dry-cleaning available
Fantastic soap & shampoos in your bathroom
Lots of huge fluffy white towels

Please note: The Gym facilities are elsewhere and keep short hours, ask for details

You get:
• A great nights sleep
• A fantastic buffet breakfast that will fill you up for the day
• You are in THE hotel!
• Great lounge bar that’s a real nightspot
• Free newspapers, magazines and maps in the lobby

CROWBERRY GUEST HOUSE (SCOTLAND): GOOD FOR BUSINESS

by DAO

When I found out I would be working on the Isle of Lewis I set about finding what I wanted. A quiet B&B with a bit of luxury while still being within company budget. I booked the Crowberry and am glad I did. Situated 7 miles north of Stornoway, it only has 4 bedrooms and is quiet. The beds were the best I slept in during a continuous 3 months of business travel. My room was really great. Huge mirrors, large closets, its own steam iron & board, remote TV and ‘invisible’ heating. My bathroom had a heated floor. Coupled with great hot showers and with my in-room coffee; I set off each day in a good mood. That is after my excellent breakfasts. Fresh fruit, fired breakfasts and/or porridge. Just order the night before and it’s just outside your door. The free Wi-Fi was a help for work. Are you a dog or cat person? They have 2 friendly dogs and 2 friendly cats you can visit anytime. The best thing? SLEEP! Yes, a good night’s sleep every night. You really have to have a car to stay here, but town is just down the road.

The owners, Alasdair and Lisa Maclean, are a class act and made me feel welcome. I highly recommend Crowberry as a Business Stay B&B.

• Great beds and bedding
• Awesome breakfasts including hot salmon, fresh fruit, fried breakfast, haggis and porridge
• Packed lunches, picnics and/or flasks of hot drinks on request
• Great ‘library’ covering the island including restaurants and events
• Scottish Arran Aromatics toiletries (soap/shampoos)
• Underfloor heating in the bathroom
• Steam iron, ironing board, hairdryer
• Excellent mirrors and closets
• TV/DVD/Alarm Clock radio
• Business meetings/lunches up to 12 people on request
• QUIET

MARKAKIS STUDIOS - SANTORINI, GREECE: GREAT PRICE & LOCATION

by DAO

I can assure you I paid less for this fantastic place than the rates on their own website. Markakis Studios is on a quiet side-street just south of the main square. In fact it’s next door to a car park that is only used during the day. Quiet, peaceful, yet a very short walk to all the noise.

This is a small, but intimate hotel. Its small pool is just right for its size. The rooms are large and actually consist of a kitchen, corridor, bathroom, bedroom and a balcony. Not bad for less than 50 Euros. They also give you plenty of closet/storage space.

The staff are very nice, clean the room everyday and make you feel welcome. You can even keep your room up to 6 pm on departure day for 20 Euros. They have a nice lobby that even has a shower if you need to hang out before going to the airport. Just 2 doors away is a fantastic grocery store run my Stelios. This store sells everything cheaper than the other stores in town. You are less than 2 blocks from the main square and the Caldera Views. You simply cannot do better than here for the combination of price, facilities and location.

Each ‘room’ or apartment has:

• Kitchen with dinning table and a good-sized fridge that works very well
• It’s own balcony, some with flowers
• Lots of closet/storage space
• Shower
• Remote control TV
• Remote control Air-conditioning
• Desk, chairs, hooks, mirrors
• Quiet at night. Every night.

The only downside is that the beds are very firm.
