Yom Kippur in Budapest

by whayle

Are High Holiday Day services held in Budapest that are open to visitors? If so, where, and is advanced permission/tickets needed to attend?

Thanks!

Go to this site: http://www.jewishtraveladvisor.com/jewish-kosher.php?ac=Budapest

Scroll down and click on Synagogues.
If you click on the blue button with the name of the synagogue you will get a page with the details of that synagogue.
Try writing to them directly.

Hi,

There are several operating synagogues. First question is that you are curious about services in Bp as a visitor or you want to "celebrate" it? For visitors synagogues are not open on service days. On service days only those can enter who want to "participate" in prayings. There are several wings of judaism are representated in hungary. What wing do you belongig to?

To the original poster (if you're still there!) I will be visiting Budapest and also will be there on Yom Kippur, looking for a synagogue to visit for services. If you have found any information, I'd appreciate it if you can please share! Thanks, and maybe we'll run into each other there.

What "wing" you are belonging to? I can send you addresses upon your interest.
Or which part of the city will you stay? I can send you addresses close to your hotel also.

You can also check out the Chabad centres in Budapest here:

http://www.chabad.org/centers/default_cdo/country/Hungary/jewish/Chabad-Lubavitch.htm

They are known for holding services for visitors.

Thank you for your response. I am not Orthodox, but on Yom Kippur I will fast and I prefer to be at an Orthodox synagogue. My hotel is not in Central Budapest, but in the area of the Aquincum Museum, so I will travel to the synagogue probably by train. Thank you!

Thanks for that idea, I forgot about Lubovitch! I will check out that website.

Good luck, hope that you find something suitable.

Hi,

In this case Frankel synagogue is your best choice.
You can contact with the rabbi Tamás VERŐ on e-mail to get contact when the services are starting.
I'm sending you his mail address privately on VT mail.
From aquincum museum the synagogue is only cc. 7 km's far.
You have to take the suburban railway (HÉV). The synagogue is between the stations of Margaret bridge and Szépvölgyi street.
At Szépvölgyi street you have to change to tram 17 and go 2 stops to Kavics street.
Frank synagogue is a very nice one. It is hidden between the houses. It's very popular one. There are a lot of people there and sometimes a bit noisy.

Money and tipping

by HORSCHECK

Hungary doesn't have the EURO; the official currency is the Forint (1 Forint = 100 Filler). There are many warnings to not exchange money in the street. In fact during my 6 days in the city noone offered me to exchange money in the street.
In the tourist areas restaurant prices often include a service charge, in other places it is recommended to give a tip of 10-20 %.

Packing List

by Bigs

Bring a little backpack for shopping etc. Summer can be really hot in this city, better bring sunmilk and a cap with you. Bring your bathing suit......and a bathcap if you have.....the most baths recommend it!

"Dry" bob-sledge track

by beluga

Here's an entertainment tip. On walking distance from the Visegrad castle there is a bob-sledge track - it's without ice off-course, you glide down some metal tube and it's pretty nice.

There are 2 tracks that run parallel. If you want to go fast use the inside track. If you're with children or you're there as a couple you might try the outside track.
