You will find Vienna>Budapest train times, details and fares in english here:

http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp

Unles there is a special online advance fare offered by OEBB for the train you want you will pay the same fare if you buy online from them or at the station. You will not get a cheaper fare through other agencies such as Raileurope..in fact, you will probably pay more.

You can get a train or bus to Vienna from the airport. Details and times in English here:

http://www.viennaairport.com/jart/prj3/via/website.jart?rel=en&content-id=1129903097097&reserve-mode=active

Train takes 16 or 25 minutes, bus 25-35 minutes.

I have heard nothing about Orangeways being unreliable in any way. But if you want to get to Budapest the same day as you arrive in Vienna you may struggle to catch the bus, which leaves at 1900 from Vienna bus station. Details, timetables and fares here:

It was a while ago that I was in Vienna, but at that time there was a shuttle that ran between the airport and the train station. The cost of the shuttle was minimal. The distance not too far.

There was a train that ran from Vienna to Budapest, but only a couple of times a day. It takes about three hours and the one thing I'd warn you of is to be sure of the departure time of the train from Vienna to Budapest before you arrive in Vienna. I didn't do this and because I stopped for a meal before moving on, I ended up missing the train completely.

There are more than 20 trains a day to Budapest from Vienna, they leave from either the Sudbahnhof or the Westbahnof, some are direct and some will need a change of trains along the way, not the "couple of trains a day" mentioned by the above poster.

Tip: Consider changing trains in Györ. Buy the 14 EUR Euregio-Ticket to Györ in Vienna and then buy another ticket to Budapest in Györ. This will be cheaper than the regular fare to Budapest. (Regular fare for Vienna-Budapest is 35 EUR, Vienna-Györ 14 EUR, Györ-Budapest 13 EUR.)

From Wien Flughafen
to: Budapest

via: Györ, duration of stay 30 min.

Thanks for the updated information yyr.

I stand corrected.

I did mention that it was a long time ago when I went to Vienna but thought the warning might be useful and worth mentioning.

Travel Tips for Budapest

Visit St. Stephen's...

by zeelie

Visit St. Stephen's Bascilica.

Always like visiting churches, especially the traditional ones...somehow it gives me a sense of peace and serenity. When I stepped into the St. Stephen's Bascilica, there was some hymn being played, believe it was in Latin, truly beautiful music.

It was great !
My host Alain accompanied me in the 2 Opera Theaters that he took me.
Again, another view inside the 2nd Opera House, called Magyar Allami Operahaz.
So gold-coloured ! So many people !

Hunyadi Janos is one of the main routes up to the north end of the Castle Hill and is primarily for people living there, guests at the hotels and those on Castle/ Museum business. The street leads to Szentharomsag Square, where several tourist sights are seen.

The location is at the north side of the Castle/Palace, nearly opposite the Parliament building.

Shoes

by ophiro

If you are planning to walk a lot around the city you must take good and comfortable walking shoes.
The distances here are big and you might find yourself walking a lot from sight to sight even if you will use public transportation like the metro or tram.

For example - on the first day i walked from the hotel on Kelvin square to the Jewish synagogue and from there around the Jewish quarter and to heroes square from Andrassy street - something like 10 km.

Ferenc Liszt Museum

by Heniko
