restaurant scams

by corwyn

So, we will be visting Budapest in August. I've been reading, on just about every website, about the restaurant scams where they switch the menus, etc.

I assume that this scam is most likely highest in the summer time.
Any suggestions on what can be done to avoid it. What happens if you just refuse to pay and call the tourist police?

Yes, only go to a restaurant recommended by either an up-to-date guidebook or VT. You may even print the blacklist of cheating restaurants from somewhere... maybe the website of the US Embassy in Budapest. Don't bother much about hawkers, just say no thanks, and walk past.

I don't think there's a Tourist Police in Hungary. We are no Thailand or Singapore, you'll see.

I am uncertain where you have been reading about this, but I have eaten at quite ligterally hundreds of restaurants in Budapest over the past decade, as a non-Hungarian speaking foreigner -- from dives to fancy spots and have never, ever seen or heard of such a problem. The places listed on the US Embassy website are uniformly stripjoints, which are risky in any country and no day in the park in Budapest (and if that's what you were obliquely inquiring about, I apologize)

but my advice is that you should eat where your spirit takes you; of course, good advice is always good advice, and in English I think the best advice is at http://chew.hu or http://everythingbudapest.eu but ultimately Budapest is among the safest and most welcoming cities in the world

Two of the many cheating nightclubs were closed this week by the District 5 local authorities. They've had enough of scams.

Travel Tips for Budapest

Ugly communist era building blots landscape

by blint

One of the best things about Budapest is the architecture, but unfortunately the Nazi's blew up a lot of Budapest on their retreat from WWll. Including the bridges and obviously the building that was where you see that ugly concrete monstrosity now!

It's such a shame buildings like that spoil my photos of an otherwise amazing place!

My tip is that you should be careful where you point your camera just in case one of these ugly buildings sneak in unnoticed!

Look up!! :)

by MedioLatino

Budapest has plenty of murals, mosaics and other beauties on the building facades...so work your neck and look up! :) This one is a mosaic on the house of Fovam ter 4, in front of the Main Market Hall of Fovam ter (you can get there by tram No. 2, 47 and 49 or just by walking down to the Danubeside (Szabadsag Híd - Liberty Bridge) from Kalvin ter (M3 underground station)

BUDAPEST, one of the most...

BUDAPEST, one of the most beautiful capitals in the world.
You will find this place on the other part of the river, where the town is called PEST. There you will have a magnificent view over BUDA and the rest.

The Buda forest and street

by 1courage

Since I live on the Buda hills, I go very often to the forest, mostly to ride the bycicle.
There is a long long street wich begins at the Normafa, touches the Elisabeth Belvedere, takes a big turn in the forest (there is a turnout where you can leave the forest towards Budakeszi) and finishes in the Mátyás király street (Just watch the beautiful villas!), crossing the line of the Cogwheel railway. This street is very quiet also because only ambulance, police, fire department cars and taxis are allowed. This is why most of the times you don`t see any people and cars passing by (only on weekends), but there are allways drivers that believe that these rules are not valid for them, so better be careful.
