Churches in Budapest

by paddingtonbears

I wonder whether anybody can advise me on where would be good to go to Mass on a Sunday in Budapest. I know that both St Stephen's basilica and the Matthias church have Mass in Latin at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Are there other churches that have a Mass in Latin on Sundays? Ideally I would like to go to a Mass that has music. Would those two churches be the ones with the best choirs, or are there others? I am happy to go to Mass in the ordinary or the extraordinary form, but assume that the ordinary form is the one I would find at the larger churches anyway. If the Mass is advertised as being in Latin will the entire service be in Latin or will there still be some parts of it in Hungarian, such as the readings?

PS. I already know that the 'old rite' (i.e. extraordinary form?) is celebrated at 3.30 p.m. on Sundays at the Inner City Parish Church.

Travel Tips for Budapest

Try Langos

by MLW20

A really good Hungarin food/snack to try is Langos. Langos is fried dough covered in sour cream and shredded cheese. I think you can also get it with other toppings. Langos makes a filling, tastey meal and is pretty cheap.

You can buy it at a booth on the second floor at the Great Market Hall. We also had it at a booth near the Esceri Market.

Street Signs and Maps

by johngayton

In its entirety Budapest stretches for about 28 km along the banks of the Danube but most of the places of tourist interest are centrally-located and easily accessed on foot or by short journeys using the excellent public transport system.

Within the city centre there's plenty of signposts giving directions to nearby places of interest and most of the Metro stations, railway stations and other strategic points have useful city maps. These maps are also available from the various "Tourinform" offices.

The streets themselves are well-signed and usually the streetsign also includes the district, the building numbers, and the direction thereof.

If you do get temporarily lost you'll find the locals particularly helpful with directions, and especially if you pop into a bar and buy a drink before asking for assistance ;)

Szent Teréz (Teresa) church at Király street

by 1courage

The Saint Teresa church can be found near the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy, at the crossing of the Király street and the Nagymező street.

This part of the City is the VI.th district and it is called Terézváros since 1777.

The construction of this church began in 1801 according to Fidél Kasselik`s plans. In 1809 the church was already utilizable. It was originally consacrated to the Holy spirit.

Only in 1822 was renamed Saint Teresa of Avila on the decree of the primate Sándor Rudnay.

The tower was designed by Miklós Ybl in 1871 and it had also a fire watching purpose.

In 1962 the rooftop suffered a heavy damaged and for years it was held by 4x4 concrete columns (You can immagine how "beautiful" it was).

The complete external renovation was effectuated between 1997 and 2001.

Castle District - Budai var

by m-joy

Castle hill consists of the Castle itself and a very lovely old quarter which is unfortunately overrun by tourists in the daytime. Nevertheless you find some nice little old houses, cafes here. The walkway around Buda hill offers a great view on Budapest city (best from Fisherman’s Bastion) but as well on the other hills around Buda city.
