Paying for hotel in forint or Euro

by oslocairo

I am using US Dollars and was wondering if it would be better to pay in Forints or Euros, or do I have choice, or does it matter? I noticed that online, many hotel sites are only in Euros and the Dollar is weak against the Euro, so I was hoping to save some money by paying in Forints. Any comments?

I found in August that I could only pay in euro if I paid cash. The forint is the legal currency and credit/debit card payments are automatically taken in it.

Therefore you'll need to calculate credit card charges as well as exchange rates and cost of exchanging/withdrawing euros before you know which is best.

To be honest, the difference for me was not really worth the hassle of doing such calculations. I paid quite happily with my card, in forints.

By the way, the hotel euro quotes worked out exactly the same as the price in forints (give or take a few ten-thousoundths). The hotel would have accepted cash in euros or forints but there was no problem in using my card/forints at all.

www.booking.com will quote you hotels in forints (or many other currencies) btw. Most hotel sites will do so......there is usually a button to click somewhere.

Thanks for the quick reponse. Then Iwon't be too concerned which currency they use.

ditto. I used fiorints exclusively when in Budapest.

Use forints when you are out ad about too. It is always, always best to use the legal currency in Europe. If you are allowed to pay in euros (other than hotels which have already quoted you the rate) you are likely to get a very poor exchange rate indeed.

Travel Tips for Budapest

Once you decide to come to...

by kamon1

Once you decide to come to Budapest you must have a walk on the Royal Castle Hill. Walk in the narrow streets, among few hundred years old houses, walk into the small internal gardens (pazio), and take pictures from Fisher Bastion. Do not forget to visit the wonderful gothic church named after King Matyas. In a November evening when it was already snowy, we drove to the huge Heroes Square, where the sculptures of the Hungarian Royalities are standing. The night was a chilly and foggy, and the site was still majestic (see picture). My guests from CA were amazing the square. We finished the day with some glass of wine and tasty Hungarian food (sausage, bread, hot pepper) in my home.

This busy and bustling square can become one of the places that you will see a lot in your travels in the part of Buda. This is a centeral ;point of transport in the city, tram lines leave and arrive to this place from all around the city, there is also a ,M2 station here and the Mammut shopping cenrer is at the other side of the road.

Important Greeting

by tamasbr

It is absolutely imperative in Hungary to say, goodmorning, goodafternoon, goodevening before you start any conversation at all; whether you are talking to your best friend or a salesclerk at the metro station! When I first went to Hungary and asked for directions from a Policeman, he became very very upset that I did not greet him properly; Just by saying Can you please,,...... and than thank-you at the end is not good enough!!!!!!!!!! In Hungary, always start with goodmorning, etc. Every other politeness is important, but it will mean nothing if you do not start with the goodmorning, goodafternoon etc.

Street Parade

by anaiis

Love Parade - Hungarian version. Catch it if you are there! We went to see the Opera house (warning - no shows in July and August, the same as in Slovenia) and saw this Parade moving on Hajos utca leaving tons and tons of plastic and trash behind. Some love ... there were a few truck cleaning the mess afterwards.
