Least expensive between Budapest & Dubrovnik

by monicarc

Just wondering which place is least expensive for mid-range hotels, meals (a mix of mid-range places), transportation for day trips and souveniers (nothing fancy, things such as magnets, t-shirts, and the like). Thanks!

They are so different in terms of what they offer that I don't know quite how to compare them! In Budapest there is a lot to see in the city itself, which is pretty big. Dubrovnik is tiny so you could be going further afield, e.g. Mostar, Montenegro (see coach excursions on http://www.atlas-croatia.com/en2/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=51). It has a resort area where you can probably easily find a mid-range hotel, but you might spend more on transport (depending of course on what you do); I stayed at the Hotel Lapad, beween the resort area (Lapad peninsula) and the city, which was excellent for my needs.
Budapest has plenty of hotels at all levels, I have stayed at the Best Western Orion which is a mid-range place, see http://www.booked.net/hotel/4691/Best-Western-Hotel-Orion-Budapest_overview.html.
My totally unscientific impression is that it is easier to eat cheaply in Dubrovnik than in Budapest, but then B is a capital city and I was frequenting "better" restaurants and having coffee and cake at those wonderful cafés.

Depending on where you are starting from, the difference in air fare in getting there might be a lot more important than any differences in costs while you are there, especially if it is a relatively short visit.

As Fugu said, some prices (especially accommodation) in Dubrovnik are highly seasonal so that could make a big difference.

Some organised excursions from Dubrovnik (e.g. to Mljet or Mostar) can be rather expensive. Of course you can have a good time without doing these excursions, but depending on your interests it is a potential significant cost. Most excursions from Budapest could probably be done by public transport so this is probably less of a factor.
