I am not sure, but it is possible that since you have to use partner airlines in the one world alliance, that you have to speak to an agent. In my case, since I use a travel agent who is well-connected with American, it is transparent to me when I redeem miles on AA, BA, and other one world flights, as I have certainly done to get to locations on continental Europe from the DFW area.

I see that while the website won't let you do the AAdvantage mile redemption online to Prague from the US, that it is easy to construct a routing for a fee from the US to Prague through London using AA and BA, so I have to assume that my hunch is correct - the problem is that to go east of Vienna, you'll have to redeem miles on some one world partners for at least part of the trip, and you can't do that online...

Let's see if anyone else has a different story...

I picked Prague at random - I see now that you placed this in the Budapest forum, but I think my main point is still true...once you involve a partner airline, things get more complicated...

Travel Tips for Budapest

Beautiful City

by anaiis

I enjoy walking in the Budapest centre, looking at buildings and admiring the architecture. But Budapest in condemned to renovation. Although the city centre looks great and you can wander around exploring its treasures, there are some uglier parts of the city that are usually not visited by tourist (especially industrial area). But in those parts its clearly visible, how people live in Budapest. The glamour for tourists is not there. Typical houses look modest, small and are mostly square shaped with one floor only. There is a small green garden around them. Its just the opposite of what you see in this picture! The Budapest allways gives me this feeling of freedom and mixing cultures. I am also crazy about all those spas - and I had yet begun to explore them! Budapest is a mosaic of history periods, people, nations. I love that cosmopolitan feeling! I even love the language barrier - don't try to guess what they are saying - its impossible!. You can't even guess the words for women or men when heading for the toilet!

Budapest floods

by budapest8

If there has been a heavy snowfall in the winter, then at the beginning of Spring
or even some Summers if there is heavy precipitation then the Danube will
flood it's banks and the roads running on either side of each embankment
will dissapear under water! Well not the floods!

Breakfast

by cathy9510usa

Budapest residents don't go out to breakfast, although they sometimes buy pastries or similar items from kiosks. Most tourists do get breakfast included with room cost, but we had an apartment and didn't want to cook breakfast every day. We found a terrific sandwich shop open at 9 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on Sundays.

There are at least three loactions in Budapest, one of them located just about opposite St. Stephen's cathedral. Addresses are given in the website. The sandwiches are beautifully created and arranged, and they are quite inexpensive.

Do not just ask for a 'cup of coffee' - coffee is almost an art form here because of the Turkish influence in the history. So ask for expresso, melange americano etc. It is always served strong with a glass of water.

Urania National Movie Theater

by danbp

Quite a few tourists think about watching a movie one evening instead of discovering as much as possible while wandering around.

But it's a wrong way of thinking - you miss a lot if you simply walk past the Urania. It's 113-years-old building was restored in its original Venetian Gothic and Eastern Moor style in 2002. If the Hungarian State Opera House is the queen of theaters - then the Urania National Movie Theater is the queen of cinemas.

Take any of buses 7,7A,78 to 'Vas utca' or 'Kazinczy utca', buses stop in front of the cinema.

Walk in, choose a film (there are Hungarian, German and English-speaking art movies on screen), buy your ticket (tickets 390-600 HUF to Csortos and Fabri Halls, 790 HUF to Main Hall), leave your jacket at the free cloakroom (unusual in Hungarian movie theaters!), enjoy a coffee in Urania Cafe upstairs - but watch your clock! Don't miss your film!
