Smoking policies in Budapest

by califtraveler

I am a smoker (no lectures please). Can anyone enlighten me on the current smoking policies in Budapest with regard to hotel rooms, bars and restaurants? Thanks for your help.

Smoking is not allowed in hotel rooms. In bars and restaurants without open air sections, you have to go out and smoke. The only exceptions are the cafes, bars and restaurants which have certain sections or tables open to air. I guess this will be your only hope. And sometimes, in really high end places, the customers are not disturbed for smoking in closed areas :)

Hotels have their own policies about rooms but the vast majority (from my researches last summer) seem to be non-smoking everywhere.

As far as I am aware (visted last August) bars and restaurants etc may have separate smoking/non-smoking areas, or may be entirely non-smoking, or may allow smoking: it seems to depend on the individual establishment. There are often tables outside, of course....as it was so warm I always ate outside anyway.

I've been to Budapest last summer and sometimes I had to choose the second or third bar or restaurant, but finally I always found a place where smoking was allowed.

I do not agree to the information of a former poster, that smoking in hotels is forbidden. At least the Novotel Centrum has rooms for smokers and non-smokers. But it's advisable to book rather early. When I stayed there, the hotel was rather empty, but the smokers rooms we're nearly fully booked.

Have a great trip!

Hello

My friend is working in a hotel in the city center. I've just asked her if they have smoking rooms. They have it.
I don't want to make public ads here so I'm sending you the name of the hotel in pm.

Fishermen's Bastion

by codrutz

Halászbástya - The Fishermen's Bastion. This ornate terrace complex (built around 1900) provides a point from which you may enjoy a magnificent view of the Parliament building across the river as well as some refreshments. If you are hungry, there are a number of good restaurants close by.

Matthias Church

Beneath the Palace carved into the hill are catacombs formed by the hot thermal underground springs for which the region is famous. During the World War II this labyrinth was used as a bomb shelter but it was the Turks in the Middle Ages who dug out the limestone caves to form 10km of tunnels. Today you can take a guided tour of some of these caves for around Ft900 for adults and Ft700 for children. There's also an uninspiring waxwork exhibition depicting the history of Hungary and a Labyrinth Café which has live music in the summer. The caves are open daily from 9.30am to 8.00pm.

Do you smoke?

Rákóczi út is the long way to Keleti palayudvar that I baptized Nikórette út: every 50m you run into an ashtray, some full of cigarettes, some other empty, but ALL sponsorized by a famous stop-smoking gum...

The Elisabeth-belvedere

by 1courage

You must walk about 1,5 km from the Normafa to reach the Elisabeth belvedere.
This monument was also constructed according to the plans of Frigyes Schulek (architect of the Matthias church&Fishermen`s bastion), between 1908 and 1910 to commemorate the Empress Sissy, particularly loved by the hungarians.
If the weather is clear, you can watch around in a 77 km range(!!)
The tower is 23,5 meters high, and you must do more than 100 steps to arrive to the top.
This monument has just been renovated this year(2006). Now it`s in a perfect shape. I think that if you have time, it`s a good idea coming here to spend some hours in the Nature.
