Travel Tips for Budapest

Flooding of the Danube

by littlesam1

I had many plans for my trip to Budapest. One of my the big items I had planned was to take a river cruise to Bratislava from Budapest. I saw many pictures of the cruise on the internet and thought it looked beautiful. I had also been to Bratislava for a short period three years previously and I wanted to return for a second visit. The weather gods were not with me on this trip. The Danube was flooding and all cruises were cancelled. Although Budapest was spared any major flood damage, the river was overflowing its banks every day during my visit. As you can see from the three pictures attached here the flooding was just bad enough to cancel my plans. If you travel to this area of Europe in the early spring watch the weather reports and be prepared to make changes in your plans when necessary.

As Castle Hill rises 50 to 60...

by matza

As Castle Hill rises 50 to 60 meters (165 to 200 ft.) above the Danube, the inhabitants of Buda- pest rightly say that they go 'up' to the Castle. If you are going by car, a winding road, which offers a wonderful view, starts at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge. This is also where bus 16 runs, starting at Engels tér and passing through the whole Castle District.
A special bus marked 'V' also starts at the Buda end of the Chain Bridge and serves the National Gallery. The other chief road to the Castle District starts from Moszkva tér, the trade centre of Northern Buda, and reaches Castle Hill through the Vienna Gate (Bécsi kapu). However, the pleasantest approach is on foot. You can start from any of the main streets running round the hill-Fô utca, Batthyány utca or Attila utca-and by taking the quiet little streets, steps or slopes cut in the castle walls, you reach the Castle District in a very few minutes. Paprika

by ophiro

The Hungarian cuisine is very famous for the Paprika - the spicy hot pepper that brought by the turks in the 16th-17th century.

You will find in any touristic area and the central market hall stands with a lof of dried paprika in packets outside.

You can buy paprika in a few ways : a big packet , a paste (comes in bottles or tubes) , powder.

Discover local food and drink!

by izabellcs

Many tourists can get only to those places, which are recommended in guide books. At the Budacast website you can find valuable information about where to go, what to eat - like where to go in the city centre to eat fish soup or which non-commercial cake shop (cukrászda) sells the cheapest and -I'd say- the best flódni (local cake with 3: walnut, poppy seed and apple layers).

If you plan to visit the Zoo, you can also listen to an audio show made with zoo visitors.

Or if you plan continuing your trip towards Romania (Transylvania), here you get some insider info.

I find this site very helpful not only for tourist but for locals, as well.

Chain Bridge's master living in the Tunnel

by MedioLatino

The Tunnel under the Castle Hill is the home of Mr Janos Fazekas and his family, who is the master of the Chain Bridge.

He lives in the appartment at the entrance of the Tunnel since 40 years and he still likes his job, even though he gots lots of "funny" alarms from youngsters passing by about the lions of the Bridge running away and so on...:)

His duty is to keep the Bridge as it is, check the state of the chains and the structure and also to clean the Lions who occasionaly "receive" hats and cigars in their mouth and other strange things.
