Travel Tips for Budapest

Avoiding False Colours in your Night Pictures

by RhineRoll

One of the things that make Budapest such an attractive and atmospheric place is the amount of monuments and houses being lit at night.

The light of the lamps used has a pretty high content of red light causing especially digital cameras to yield unbalanced pictures. The professionals probably know how to perfectly adjust the white balance, but it might as well work if you just change the white balance setting of your digital camera from "auto" or "daylight" to "indoor".

The left picture was shot with an automatic white balance setting clearly being too much in the red. The right one was taken with white balance setting changed to indoor.

If visiting in the summer...

If visiting in the summer months, visit Lake Velence and take a ferry over to Mosquito Island. You can also go by car to Mosquito Island. The view is spectactular of the lake and there is a wonderful little restaurant on the island with live music. Excellent cuisine. Try the local Fish.

The Hungarian Use of Names

by keeweechic

Like some Asians, the Hungarians use their names in reverse order with the given name last and the family name first.

Also roman numbers are preferable to normal numbers for use in floor levels, months and districts of their cities. In demonations of thousands, they will also leave a space instead of using a comma.

If you hear sirens, don't step on the road!

by janika

Advise: If you hear sirens, don't step on the road! This means Ambulance, Police or fire fighter trucks or cars coming. They will not stop to anyone and they drive very fast.

You might also see police motorcycles following or leading large, black luxury cars (limousines). Especially around the parliament building. Again do not cross the road or step on the road at that time to take pictures. You might end up in jail for an overnight questioning about your activities.

Here is a rare picture of the parliament building. Most pictures you see are taken from the other side of the Duna (Danube) river. That's actually the back of the building. Here is the front. it's gorgeous

Here is some info on it:

Name: Parliament Building
Built: 1885-1902
Designed by: Imre Steindl
Type: Government Building
Location: Along the Danube River
