How crowded is Budapest in May?

by briant13

Hi everyone,

I normally travel to Europe in Feb/March when it is the off-season or shoulder season. This year I will be traveling to Budapest in mid-May -- how busy should I expect it to be? It will be busier than I'm used to, obviously, but should I be expecting throngs of people, long waits to see attractions and reservations required for restaurants?

Thanks in advance!

I visited in late May/June. It was by no means stuffed full of people.........I don't think you need to worry. Not sure you'd have the problems you'd mention even at the busiest times of year.

The most probably there will be a lot of people. Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities of Europe and a very popular destination.
But I don't think you'll face those 'long waits to see attractions' the most pf them are open air, you just walk by and see them

True, no long waiting times usually. You should only expect longer waiting times if you'd like to go inside the Parliament building, and maybe Matthias Church. But that's all.

Brian, no worries at all, can just agree with the Inga and Dani.

Travel Tips for Budapest

First time I was in Budapest...

by vladimir_b

First time I was in Budapest ((like most of tourists) I sow beautiful Castle District and Matias Church, -at Buda side of town, Heroes Square with museums, the magnificent Parliament building and Vaci Street -Pesta side of town. One evening we were cruising on the Donau River and looking at buildings from the river, so it was nice. Beautiful, Chain Bridge (Ersebet bridge) especially in the evening is really fascinating sight, with all those lights on and lions at the beginning and at the end of the bridge. The main shopping street is Vaci but I wouldn’t recommend it because it is very expensive, and you can find and buy lot of cheep stuff in some other streets that are near center (Ersebet Corut) and one big shopping center (West End - near Nugaty train station).

Proud Budapest

Budapest is the only city in Hungary that I have visited, but I got a sense of the national spirit just walking around this beautiful city. I noticed the Hungarian flag hanging from the front of buildings all over the place.

Chess playing in the thermal water

by 1courage

Chess playing is a real local costum. In Hungary this (mental) sport was allways very popular enough to think about Lajos Portisch, Péter Lékó and the Polgár sisters. In the parks, thermal spas you can see chess players unless the weather is too cold but even in the train stations there are old people who offers you to play with them for a tiny sum.
You can also win but note that they are experts so considere it more a fun than a possibility to become rich>;-)
The most famous of them play in the Thermal Spas, even in winter! The hot water helps them not to freeze. Well, in the Széchenyi Spa there is even written that the maximum time a man should spend in the hot water is about 20 minutes. Still they play hours until the thermal Baths close and they have no problems at all.

trip to Godillo (Empress Elisabeth of Austria )

by sussexman

I really enjoyed our trip to Godillo Castle near Budapest in March 2008. The guided tour of the building was interesting , but a bit overlong in duration after so many rooms etc to see, along with noisy parties of school kids in groups. However we did have a very good Torte and Cappucino in the cafe for free (courtesy of the tour company), and bought some interesting, but pricy momentoes from the Castle shop. In summer, the gardens host music concerts etc, but sadly the Riding School was not open, and the restoration work will take a few more years at a big cost in Florints/Euros.

Nyugati pu

by german_eagle

The name is misleading. Nyugati pu means Western Railway station. But the trains that leave from here run towards North and East. See my transportation tip also.

However, what's remarkable is the architecture of this train station. Gustave Eiffel's company (yes, the same guy who designed the Eiffel Tower!) built it 1874-77. Nowadays most of the cast-iron construction is new - due to its bad shape it had to be replaced during the restoration of the building some years ago. The other parts of the train station are still original. It's also worth to have a look at the MacDonald's at the right side: probably the most beautiful place of the fast food chain (see pic #5).

At the back of the station a modern shopping mall was built. I didn't bother to go there.
