Bad experience

Terrible (1.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 16, 2015

I am staying at Corinthia Hotel Budapest. I had a very bad experience which I have never had before at a hotel, and I have stayed at many many hotels during my life. There where money taken from my vallet which was in my notebook bag. The management here at the hotel doesn´t want to do anything about this. I have very strong feeling that they don´t believe me.

Indulge in luxury

This is one of the remaining true Grand Hotels in Europe, built during the Belle Epoque, run down in the communist era, restored to old glory and reopened in 2003. It is all marble, stucco and gold. Sometimes it is a bit too much, I am afraid they wiped out the charm with the restoration and think it needs a bit more patina - maybe this will come as time goes by.

Location is very good, a tram stop is vis-a-vis, the metro only five minutes away. Opera is in walking distance and the popular hang out place Ferenc Liszt square with plenty of restaurants and cafes is just around the corner.

Service was impeccable, but I didn't ask for much, so I can't really comment.

The fitness and spa area is excellent. As hotel guest you change in your room, grabe the bathrobe and take the elevator down. Beautiful architecture in the spa, two jacuzzis, saunas, steambath, showers etc. The gym had surprisingly good machines. The maid hands out towels and provides water and fresh fruit.

Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment. Cereals were only cornflakes and dried fruit, no natural flakes/grain. The assortment of meat/salami/cheese was a bit small. They had several sorts of bread, but no dark bread. The loose Darjeeling was gone and despite I told them the first morning of my stay they didn't get any until I left three days later. A plus was freshly squeezed OJ (upon request) and freshly made eggs/omeletts. Yummy.

Unique Quality: I booked an Executive Single room (which was a double, single use) through the German travel agency DERTOUR. Got a great rate of 120 Euro per night incl. breakfast and the deal was stay 4 nights, pay only 3. So it came out as 90 Euro per night which is considerably less than the rack rate (and even the special offers directly from the hotel). The room was large, window to the atrium (which I didn't like but it's better than to the noisy street), with beautiful interior, equipped with everything you'd expect. A plus was the coffee/tea making facility. TV had many German and English channels. The bed was comfy (a bit on the soft side). Bathroom was really large with tub and shower. Bathrobe and slipper were provided. The prices for beverages from the mini bar were outrageous - no, thanks. Also, telephone rates are ridiculously expensive, even more than expected for a 5star hotel. Didn't use that either.

The advantage of an Executive Room (or higher category) is that you use of the Club Lounge is included. This Lounge is located on the mezzanin floor with view of the main hall/reception to one side and street to the other. They have three PCs with internet access (free), offer beverages/drinks (even alcoholic), snacks, desserts etc. for free from 6 am to 10 pm. An excellent value. The problem is you're tempted to eat/drink there instead of exploring Budapest's other nice restaurants/cafes.

Incredible service from all the staff. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. It's not right next to the Danube and the main shopping area, but is a nice 10-15 minute walk. There is a lot of other things around the hotel though.

We stayed for 3 nights in July 2004 and were very impressed indeed. The room was of a good size and spotlessly clean. All staff were very helpfull and friendly and we found the service to be faultless. The hotel is in a great location surrounded by numerous shops and restaurants. Trams pass by the door or the nearest metro station is 2 minutes by foot. The river Danube is a short walk away or 3 stops on the Metro for the weary. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a wide selection of hot and cold choices. My Wife opted for a freshly cooked omlette filled with the ingredients of her choice.

Unique Quality: The Grand Royal's strengths have to be it's location, quality of service, size and cleanliness of rooms. If I'm lucky enough to return to Budapest I know where I'll want to stay. We got a great rate through alpharooms.

Directions: Close to Oktagon Metro station.
