    Back to the 60's

The hotel seems to have been caught in a time warp. 60's decor mixed with the old Art Deco. The cafe off to the side should be in a tour listing just for the novelty of it. Kitch I tell you!

We stayed in a room that had not been updated. Nothing to write home about.

So make sure you request a room in the new wing.

Check out the hallway leading to the elevator to the bathhouse. I'm sure it was in a James Bond scene. White melanine walls with an illuminated drop ceiling.

Unique Quality: Breakfast tip...the buffet is grande. Get there well before it ends or you will not get a seat for a while and when you do the good stuff will be gone.

If you stay here, you get full use of the bathhouse! Steam yourself silly!

Directions: Can't miss it. Right over the bridge. Facing the old district.

a great place close to the famous Gellert spa

Gellert Hotel is in the same building as the famous spa / bath in Art Nouveau-style and the hotel is certainly the perfect place for those tourists, who intend to spend a lot of time inside these beautiful, ancient bathing-halls and who are at the same time willing to pay their prices...

Click on my link below and take a closer look for the "Package offers" - they look really good, including all the bathing-facilities, breakfast-buffet e.g. 210 €uros for 3 nights for a single is quite a good price, when I compare it with the 177 €uros that are charged by the Ibis*** in Pest for a total of 3 nights withOUT breakfast and of course without such great bathing-facilities.

Unique Quality: The hotel is a bit OUTside of the centre, maybe 1km to the castle of Buda.
You have good connections by tram and buses and the best advantage is certainly when you have the baths inside the same building and will not have to go across the city back to your other hotel and get a cold maybe in winter...

Directions: Gellert bath and hotel are directely at the 3rd bridge " Szabadság" and opposite of the Markethall and University of Sience.

A Grand Hotel (...of the past)

This hotel is deceptive. If you are used to and enjoy the modern corporate box hotels of today the Gellert is not for you. First impression is one of a tired hotel clinging on to the past. In reality it's in need of refurbishment and if this could be done without destroying its heritage and character then this could be a great hotel. Scratch through the surface though and you will appreciate its immense charm.

Sadly my single room was just that, a single room. Maybe I shouldn't complain as I got what I paid for but it was just as well that I didn't bring the cat to swing! Also it was very dark with a very poor outlook. Tired furnishings and en-suite but kept clean. I imagine some of the larger rooms overlooking the Danube could be quite the opposite.

The buffet breakfast was a grand affair within the stately restaurant. Excellent choice of food with attentive staff always ready to refill my cup.

Yes I would stay again and would recommend it to those who appreciate a style long since past and who are not too concerned if its a bit rough round the edges.

Unique Quality: The Gellerts fine architecture sets it majestically on the banks of the Danube. You cannot fail to be impressed. I even spotted it from the plane.

Unbelievably I didn't use the thermal baths for which the hotel is famous. They really should be a must see if not a must do.

Attractive large stained glass windows on the staircase landings.

There are tram stops outside the hotel which take off in all directions so getting where you want to go is easy.

Directions: Located close to Erzsebet bridge for an inspired 10 minute walk across the Danube to the fashionable shopping and restaurant district. Easy access to trams and onwards to the metro.

Gellert - spa tradition - time to relax

Danubius Hotel Gellert is one of the Hotels with the longest history in Budapest. The secessionist building was opened in 1918. It's location on the bank of the Danube near the Gellert Hill offers a great view and also a great opportunity to relax, since it has thermal water coming directly from under the Hill.

The 4 star gellert Hotel is a great place to relax, but this of course has a price.

Unique Quality: The Hotel's main attraction is the well known Gellert Spa, with thermal and other swimming pools, massage and other kinds of "threatment".

The Hotel also offers restaurants, event halls, conference rooms, etc.

Directions: On thr Buda side of the Liberty Bridge, accesible with the trams No. 47, 49, 18 and 19 or with the bus No. 7. But it's a 4 star hotel, so you might get a cab and be more stylish when arriving...:)

    Art Nouveau Style and Spa

The Danubius Hotel Gellert used to be my favorite place to stay in Budapest. (See my art'otel review for an explanation!) It is well-located on the Buda side of the Szabadság (Freedom bridge), near the Gellert Hill. The rooms vary widely in quality and price, depending on if you want a renovated room and air-conditioning in the summer.

Unique Quality: Of course, the greatest selling point is the free access to the wonderful Gellert spa. If you want to have some extensive spa time during your Budapest visit, the Gellert is a great place to stay.

Directions: On Buda side of Szabadság (Freedom) Bridge. Trams 18, 19, 47, and 49 stop here.

    Simply beautiful

This hotel is located neat the Liberty bridge and was completed in 1918. This de luxe hotel has thermal, medicinal baths and has long been a favourite for visitors to the capital, attracted by its famous restaurant and the baths. The bath complex in the Gellert hotel is the largest in Budapest. Documents show that these therapeutic springs were known centuries ago as the “muddy bath” or the building of the Achic Ilidgey in Turkish times. The Art Nouveu building contains a large pool with a series of halls about it. Water is supplied to the pool and the baths by 18 springs at 18C. The Gellert hotel is at the foot of the Gellert Hill with the famous Citadel, St. Gellert’s memorial and the Liberation monument.

Directions: At the foot of Gellert Hill

    Not for demanding

A good place for tourist group, students and backpackers, but not for whose, who want to stay in high standard hotel. Although in their leaflet they say that hotel is located in calm and quiet district, there is rather loudly because of tracks traffic in hotel's neighborhood.

Terminus Hotel lies about 3 kilometers from Peszt center, but is easy accessible - from the M3 highway, Metro line no. 3 or bus no. 4. Its double, triple and fourbedded rooms are fitted with showers. There are a bar, restaurant and free-of-charge parking place on the spot. In the close vicinity are located the Margaret Island, the great Dagaly open-air pool, the Duna Plaza Shopping Center and the Tesco hyper-market (you can direct to the hotel according to the Tesco's signposts).

    Pets allowed.

    Prices from 13 euro / night / person. Breakfast - 2 euro / person.

Rooms and bed-clothes are clean, but rather fatigued.

Only few of the staff speak English.

    Directions: District XIII

    Budapest Danubius Hotel Gellert

The Hotel Gellert, one of the leading hotels in Budapest Danubius Hotel Gellert.

The Gellert was named after Bishop Saint Gellert, who arrived in Hungary as a priest in the 11th century and was elevated to bishop when King Stephen called on him for help in his campaign to convert his Magyar tribesmen to Christianity. Gellert outlived the king, and in a subsequent pagan revolt against Christianity he was stabbed to death after crossing the Danube in a ferry from Pest. Then by handcart his attackers took him to the top of what is now called Gellert Hill and cast his body down. He was canonized in 1083, the same year as King Stephen.

Unique Quality: The unique Art Nouveau style Gellert Bath with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, Turkish thermal baths. Admission to the spa, the sparkling bath, wave bath, steam bath, sun terrace is free to hotel guests.
EUR125 per (person) is obligatory - can be paid to the hotel directly.

The classiest hotel spa in Budapest

The Gellert is arguably the classiest old hotel spa in Budapest. Access to the spa is included in the room cost. The location is great for both Buda and Pest sightseeing.

    Unique Quality: The Spa!

    Great hotel with Turkish Baths

Great facility west of the river at the base of Gellert Hill. Baths within the facility are excellent. More expensive that you need to pay, but this was my treat to myself since the rest of the trip was low budget : )

Nice walk on Gellert hill, near the Cliff Chapel & Citadella. Walk across the bridge or take the tram to get to the Pest side of town.

Unique Quality: Turkish baths! Very clean.

    Directions: Gellert Hill

    Hotel Gellért

Most basic single room is 60 EU, while typical twin is around 150 EU.

Unique Quality: This hotel is a classic style one, a memory of the golden age of turism when only aristocrats could afford to travel. The hotel has its own spa, most people stay here for a cure. It has a very relaxed atmosphere inside, while located in the city centre.
Its price is similar to other 4* hotels in the city, but the feeling is outsanding compered to those.

    This legendary...

This legendary hotel deserves a visit to admire its beautiful art nouveau swimming pool (see photo). If you can afford it, the spa & thermal programme is fantastic!!
Some history: the hotel earned its reputation in the period between the wars - Budapest's 'silver age', when a stay at the Gellért was all part of the Grand Tour. Built on the site of an old Turkish bath house, the spa facilities also date from the interwar period.
    Szent Gellért tér 1 (385 2200/fax 466 6631/ resoff@gellert.hu). Tram 18, 19, 47, 49/bus 7.
Rates single DM105-DM220; double DM280-DM410; suite DM480-DM560; extra bed DM100.
