I know neither hotel, but the Alta Moda is in a more convenient location, imo, nearer the river and with easier access to Buda and the central part of Pest.

Hi tonythe,
Both hotels have a good place. It depends on what you're planning to do in budapest.
If you are planning some party and more night life maybe Hotel Zara is slight better. If you are planning a typical touristic program (going around during the day, have a walk in the evening, etc.) the Alta Moda is slight better. I'm talking about only the location. Both hotels are in the city center close to public transport. There is no wrong choice between theese two hotels.

Alternatively, you can use the excellent www.booking.com and www.venere.com
Both list the majority of hotels in Budapest (and elsewhere), are entirely reliable and have honest guest reviews (reviews can only be posted if a stay booked through the site has been completed).

Neither location is bad. The rates at both hotels are good and they both scored pretty good with Tripadvisor. If you are a first time visitor or you are limited on time, everything else being equal, i would suggest the Alta Moda as its convenient to a lot of the sights and it is in a comfortable location for tourists in general.
Travel Tips for Budapest
Budapest open air museum
by Nemoa
The castle area is a walled complex consisting of the Old Town (Var) and the Royal Palace (Budavari palota).
The Royal Palace is located South of Castle Hill. It stands now on the site of a medieval palace destroyed by the Turkish invaders. Today, there is a grand palace Baroque style which unfortunately does not keep much of its lavish interiores as it was looted during the WWII . Today, it houses someof the most important museums of the city : , the Hungarian National Gallery, the National Széchényi Library, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Budapest History Museum.
Not to miss if the painting and sculpture is your cup of tea.
If it is not you will still enjoy the beauty of the exterior facades of the buildings and the very special medieval atmosphere of the Var.
If you like funiculars you are lucky because the Siklo funs from Clark Adam ter to Szent Gyorgy ter giving you a short ride uphill and allowing you to enjoy the views over the Danube.
If you prefer to walk in the forest or you are missing the gym you might want to access the Hill and the Old town by climbing trhe Kiraly lepcso or Royal Steps, running from Hunyadi Janos ut to the Royal Palace.
This second option is my favourite route if you allow me because of the very diffent perspectives you see of the river and the urban landscapes. Worth the effort, believe me.

The Újlaki church
by 1courage
Originally this church wich you find at half way between the Margareth bridge and Aquincum was built in 1705 by the local german colony, but it was completely rebuilt between 1746-1766 Kristóf Hamon's an Máté Nepauer's plans. The main altar was built by Hickisch Kristóf in 1799. The church was transformed by Miklós Ybl in 1877. This reconstruction was necessary also because in 1875 the church suffered grave damages in a storm.
(well, it's not that kind of tip, but just try the bakery near the church-it's simply faboulous, with loads of fantastic cookies and things like that:) )
15th March - Talking columns
by MedioLatino
The 15th March is a National Holiday in Hungary to commemorate the revolution of 1848.
At this time major festivities are being held around the city. This years new "feature": talking columns on the Danube corso between the Chain Bridge and Petofi ter (Pest side of the city).
On the columns we had famous hungarians and people from other nations as well with a recorded speech about what freedom means to them.
Nepliget Park
by edvin_br
This is one of Budapest biggest parks i belive. It is situated on the side of Pest, between the Ulloi ut, Kobanyai ut and Konyves Kalman korut.
The park is quite and sprawl over houndreds of hectars and there are a lot of promenades, Historical statues, sport centers, hotels, restaurants nd i also heard that there is an observatory there altough oi havnt been there.
It can be a good place to go for a family trip, maybe jogging, taake your dog for a walk or to go to a ride on your bike because the park as a bike path.
You can get there by using the 99 bus line which crossing the park.
Some how most of the times that i been there (and i been there a lot...), the park seemed to me a bit empty, i dont know why but mybe because its away from city Center and from main sights but i belive its woirth a visit.
