If you're backpacking around Europe and staying in Budget accomodation, you've got to expect some very basic living conditions at some stage.
The Hotel Griff Junior, at under a tenner a night per person, is exactly that...a ceiling with four walls holding it up, and some air in between. Perfect! They even give you a bed, some sheets to sleep under (clean ones!) and a window to look out of.
The showers and toilets are communal and don't smell too great. The breakfast is about as basic as you can get - tea, coffee, a bit of bread, and a few slices of ham and cheese.
If you were coming here on holiday expecting a hotel, you'd move somewhere else. But if you're hiking it on a tight budget, it'll do OK.
There's hundreds of rooms in this place, so you might even get to meet some other people.
The place is about a half an hour walk from the Danube, but luckily there's a tram stop right outside, and the two trams running from it will take to right to the heart of the city. When I did my first trip to Budapest in 2001, I stayed in Griff Junior. Hotel Griff Junior is located on the Buda side of the city in the XI. district, and it can be reached easily by tram no 19 or 49 in 20 minutes from the centre of city. They have very helpful and friendly staff. My room and bathroom were nice, clean and fresh. And the cleaner-lady took the rubbish out every day and changed the bedsheets few times. There were towels in the bathroom, so you don't necessarily need your own.
The hotel has 25 double and triple rooms with shower and WC and 97 triple rooms with washbasin. There are also seperate male and female showers and toilets on each floor for use by guests staying in rooms which just have a washbasin. A kitchen with a little dining-room can be found on every floor. You can start your day in the hotel restaurant with buffet breakfast, and a choice of set meals is available on request.
They also provide laundry facilities and a TV room. Safe, money exchange, C/C accepted, closed parking lot, pets are permitted. In the neighbouring Hotel Griff: squash courts, fitness room, massage, solarium, jacuzzi, sauna, souvenir shop.

As generally in Hungary, the breakfast can be a little...well, poor. And so it was in Griff Junior. Hungarians itself are for the most part not big eaters of reggeli (breakfast), so expect the worst of hotel breakfasts... poor coffee, weak tea, unsweetened lemon water for "juice", tiny triangles of processed cheese and stale bread. Expect the worst and you may be pleasantly surprised. Maybe.
This Hotel is also mentioned in Lonely Planet Quide, and I, personally, can recommend to stay in Griff Junior. It is away from city's hullabaloo and it is a good place to start your walks exploring the Buda-side.
The area had changed since my last visit. It has been through a minor makeover; some of the odd little shops has disappeared and modern stores has stepped in. There are McDonalds and Subways and all.... But it is nice area to walk and have a look around.
