Charles Hotel
This hotel is great value for money, and would be perfect for long stays. For as little as 39 euros per night you get a large studio apartment all to yourself, equipped with kitchen, en suite bathroom and a large bedroom. It's a little bit scruffy around the edges, but it's very clean and comfortable. It also has free wireless Internet, but my apartment was too far away from the excellent and friendly front reception for me to pick it up. You can use the hotel's networked computers instead.
One of the down sides is if you take an apartment on the side where the busy road is, as this is noisy all the way through the night. Despite being a light sleeper I'm imune to traffic noise, so it suited me just fine. The other problem is that it's not very central. However, it's only just over a kilometer to the Castle District and Elizabeth Bridge, and from there the capital is at your feet.

This hotel have big rooms (as small apartments) is good, clean and the service is ok.
Unique Quality: The breakfast is a buffet, but the hotel is little far of some places.

Looks aren't everything!
A really friendly pleasant hotel in rather run-down surroundings on Buda. The outside of the building is not particularly inviting either but don't let any of this put you off. Our room was large and nice and warm (it was freezing outside), extremely clean with a powerful shower. Breakfast is a buffet-style affair which is continuously replaced if something runs out. The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help us, making us feel very welcome. Transport was good with connections right outside the door to the Elizabeth Bridge and the Castle District. It was excellent value for money. Afterall, we were so busy sightseeing, shopping, eating and drinking that we never spent a great deal of time there, why pay more?

Retro Hotel
I had a pleasant stay at the hotel. I was on the 6th floor and overlooked the street (noisy). The sun was also blazing down on the un-airconditioned room. The room was large with very old furniture. The shower is quite high from the floor and the shower head is one of those that don't have a latch on the wall. (Might be bothersome for some). There is a bus stop directly across the street that will take you into the Pest area.
Unique Quality: The hotel staff was great! Very friendly and helpful. I checked in and the front desk gave me a bunch of brochures about the city etc. The room was clean but old! I didn't eat at the hotel so I have no comments about that. The location is quite nice in retrospect. The price was great as well! It is about a 10 minute walk to Buda castle which is very nice.

Communist Living at it's Finest!
Although I had hoped to book at the Gellert, I waited entirely too long and they were booked. So, I chose the Hotel Charles, which appeared to be lovely and in the middle of the "Castle District." The picture on the Internet is taken a night, showing soft glowing lights and an elegant yet modern hotel. Sadly, in the daytime it is a different story. Built originally as Communist housing, the changes have been few since those days. Solid, simple, typical construction for the period (70s). The staff ranged from the very friendly and helpful to the uninterested, which is standard in any hotel. Overall, the front desk staff was brilliant and a lot of fun. The room was large, although dreadfully decorated with worn out 80s gaudy velvet cheap chairs, broken tables and beds that would make a strong back weak. I did have a little kitchenette and dinette, which was convenient, and could use the minibar as a fridge. Bathroom was adequate enough, reasonably cleaned although the drain on the shower didn't work and put water all over the floor by the end of a quick rinse. Location is not exactly as advertised -- again, a couple of trams stops away you can reach the Old Market Hall and the Vaci Utca, but try to cram in there in the evening on a weeknight! Otherwise, there is nothing nearby to speak of. All in all, for the price, one can do much better.
Unique Quality: Again with me, nice but very basic breakfast in the restaurant each morning. The four or five items never changed, however other than boredom with the selection it was nice enough.

Apartment hotel
Charles hotel is an apartment hotel on the Buda side of town.
There is a bus which goes into town quite frequently, stopping opposite the hotel - tram 5 mins walk away but no metro nearby. Big shopping center 5 mins walk away via a small park.
Unique Quality: The place is really made up of apartments - mine looked like it came out of the 60's (and had not been renovated since...) - however the price is right so no complaints. No aircon which may be a problem on hot summer days. I stayed in a "standard", "executive" may be nicer.
Breakfast was average-plus, staff were all friendly.
Hotel is bookable online (instant confirmation) which is a big plus.
