This hotel is great value for money, and would be perfect for long stays. For as little as 39 euros per night you get a large studio apartment all to yourself, equipped with kitchen, en suite bathroom and a large bedroom. It's a little bit scruffy around the edges, but it's very clean and comfortable. It also has free wireless Internet, but my apartment was too far away from the excellent and friendly front reception for me to pick it up. You can use the hotel's networked computers instead. One of the down sides is if you take an apartment on the side where the busy road is, as this is noisy all the way through the night. Despite being a light sleeper I'm imune to traffic noise, so it suited me just fine. The other problem is that it's not as central as it makes out. Sure it is only a 5-10 minute walk from the Castle District, but the real center of Budapest is on the other side of the river, another 5-10 minute walk from the CD! Still, transport is good in the city and so it's not really a problem if you are staying a while and have a weekly ticket.

 | Hotel Charles & Apartment Budapest: Communist Living at it's Finest!

Although I had hoped to book at the Gellert, I waited entirely too long and they were booked. So, I chose the Hotel Charles, which appeared to be lovely and in the middle of the "Castle District." The picture on the Internet is taken a night, showing soft glowing lights and an elegant yet modern hotel. Sadly, in the daytime it is a different story. Built originally as Communist housing, the changes have been few since those days. Solid, simple, typical construction for the period (70s). The staff ranged from the very friendly and helpful to the uninterested, which is standard in any hotel. Overall, the front desk staff was brilliant and a lot of fun. The room was large, although dreadfully decorated with worn out 80s gaudy velvet cheap chairs, broken tables and beds that would make a strong back weak. I did have a little kitchenette and dinette, which was convenient, and could use the minibar as a fridge. Bathroom was adequate enough, reasonably cleaned although the drain on the shower didn't work and put water all over the floor by the end of a quick rinse. Location is not exactly as advertised -- again, a couple of trams stops away you can reach the Old Market Hall and the Vaci Utca, but try to cram in there in the evening on a weeknight! Otherwise, there is nothing nearby to speak of. All in all, for the price, one can do much better.
Again with me, nice but very basic breakfast in the restaurant each morning. The four or five items never changed, however other than boredom with the selection it was nice enough.
